A new AI tool can map out the hidden processes in our world

When we use an app or website, we only see the surface level version of that product — the one that developers have fine-tuned to make navigating as easy as possible. You don’t have to decipher lines of code in order to figure out what to watch next on a streaming service — the algorithm serves it right up to you.

But there are a lot of messy, hidden processes that go on behind the scenes to make it all work as intended. To make sense of it all, developers often create visual representations to show how each of those systems fit together. But building a chart from scratch can take a lot of time and technical expertise.

AI startup Eraser says it’s come up with a solution: It’s releasing a copilot that can generate diagrams with simple text prompts, regardless of the technical depth. It features customizable icons and intuitive editing tools. Clients who got their hands on an early version of the platform say it doubled the speed of their technical design workflows.

What can it be used for? Visualizing just about any complicated process. In one example, Eraser mapped out how users interact with a ride-hailing service, from opening the app to choosing a destination to finally closing the platform. By analyzing each step in the process, software engineers can spot confusing parts of the user experience and adjust them accordingly.

One reason we’re excited: Several big names have already invested in the platform, including Elad Gil and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman. Jack Altman, CEO of Lattice and brother of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, also counts himself as a backer. Eraser has around 1,000 customers across sectors like eCommerce, banking, and messaging services.

How to create your own assistant using OpenAI Assistants

The Assistants API from OpenAI lets you build AI assistants. These assistants can also be integrated into your website or app. The assistant can take instructions from you and also leverage models, tools, and files to respond to prompts from users.

Here’s an example of how you can build a customer support assistant:

• Compile all your product documents and customer support data

• Make sure to anonymize or delete any sensitive data if necessary

• Go to the OpenAI Assistants website and log in

• Click on create

• Pick a name, and in the Instructions field, use a prompt like: Your task is to answer any customer questions using the documentation and data provided below [paste your documentation and data]

• You can also enable file search by enabling the option in the Tools section

Once you’re done, press Create and then navigate to Playground to test it out.

You are a meditation teacher who will create a 5-minute guided meditation for a client. In your script, you will incorporate inputs based on two variables: [Mood] and [Happy Place]

[Mood] is an emotion like relaxed, happy, anxious, sad, worried, etc. You will want to acknowledge the mood and tailor the script to help your client process that emotion.

[Happy Place] is the environment you will have the client visualize throughout the meditation.

Experts are starting to question AI tools used for spotting suspects

When it comes to tracking down bad actors, investigators have found a trusty new companion: AI. It can scrape every corner of the internet for clues, saving hours of research time. And the technique is getting more popular by the day. One software, Cybercheck, has been used in some 8,000 cases across 40 states, according to an NBC News investigation.

But some legal experts are raising doubts about Cybercheck: They point out that it sometimes gets things wrong — and that no one knows how its machine learning algorithms actually work. The tool’s creator, Adam Mosher, has also been accused of flip-flopping on some key details, like whether his platform has been peer reviewed.

An emerging field: Axon, a company that produces tasers and other equipment for law enforcement, said it’s releasing an AI tool that can generate text summaries of body cam footage, raising concerns about bias and inaccuracies.

The stakes: If ChatGPT gives you the wrong advice, it usually amounts to a minor annoyance. But with AI intelligence platforms, the potential consequences are much more severe. “We’re being asked to trust a company to present evidence that could eventually put people in prison,” one civil liberties expert told NBC.

As AI platforms get more powerful, we’ll likely need to reevaluate when it’s appropriate to use them. For its part, Microsoft just updated the terms for its Azure OpenAI Service to explicitly bar police from using the platform for facial recognition.

More than half of professionals in the field of communication say they have no preference whether their colleagues use AI to help with work tasks, according to a recent Axios-Seven Letter survey.

A quarter say their view of colleagues improves after learning about their AI usage, while 20% say their view worsens. Most professionals also have either a neutral or positive view of firms that introduce AI-enhanced features into their products or services.
