THE BIG INSIGHT

MetaGPT tries to simulate - and replace - entire companies

Source: Github

The AI hype cycle is in full bloom as replacement fears graduate from worker replacement to full-blown company replacement.

Released on Github recently and fast approaching 20,000 stars, MetaGPT tries to simulate an entire software company by assigning roles like engineers, architects and project managers to AI language models.

All you have to do is feed it a line of text or code, and let MetaGPT do the rest. In fact, this developer created a whole flappy bird game in just 10 minutes with 1 line of code! She explains how she did it:

Here’s a quick summary of how MetaGPT works:

  • Agents are assigned distinct roles, similar to an assembly line setup.

  • When prompted, the model activates a chain of agents, each contributing to the task at hand.

  • The system operates on a two-tier architecture, directing agent behavior and fostering collaboration.

  • Agents produce outputs based on specific prompts and their designated "job profile."

  • The framework emulates an entire software agency.

It’s probably too soon for a tool like this to replace an entire company. But it gives us a peak into the future of what could be possible.

Worker replacement is one obvious fear. But it could also lead to a golden age of entrepreneurship as workers become empowered to launch companies without the traditional constraints of labor and capital.

82% of Americans distrust AI

A poll by the Artificial Intelligence Policy Institute, shared with Axios, reveals significant concerns about AI risks among American voters.

82% of those polled do not trust tech executives to self-regulate AI. While 56% of voters support a federal agency regulating AI, and only 14% oppose it.

This indicates both a rare policy consensus in a polarized electorate, and a declining trust in tech companies.

General public concerns and attitudes towards AI

  • 62% are concerned about AI, while 21% are excited.

  • 72% favor slowing down AI development; only 8% want to speed it up.

Global perspective on AI regulation

  • A KPMG study indicates 71% globally believe in AI regulation.

  • 62% of British adults support AI laws and regulations.

The institute advocates for a cautious AI deployment approach. The executive director of AIPI, emphasizes that Americans want responsible AI development overseen by policymakers.
