Welcome back, Superhuman
There are days where you can sense a major vibe shift in the entire industry — and yesterday felt like a big one. Meta unveiled Orion, a new pair of AR glasses that could be the first big computing platform since the smartphone. And things are looking shaky at OpenAI, as several key players announce their departure.

Days after OpenAI released its Advanced Voice mode, Meta may have already closed the gap. It’s launching a natural chat feature that lets you interact with iconic voices or create your own. It works similarly to OpenAI’s, except you don’t need a subscription — and you can try it out today. But that’s just the start.
Here’s every major announcement from Meta’s AI-focused Connect showcase:
Llama 3.2: Powered by Nvidia-supplied GPUs, Meta’s latest Llama model is the first to be fully multimodal, meaning it can seamlessly move between images and text.
Smart Glasses: Meta’s Ray-Bans will soon be able to “see” and “hear” everything you experience, helping you do things like find your car in a busy parking lot or pick out an outfit for a party. A live translation feature, meanwhile, lets you talk with others across languages in real time.
AI Studio: You can now build a custom avatar that looks like you and speaks in your voice — it can even engage in full conversations on your behalf. The company is also introducing automatic dubbing and lip-syncing, so you can publish videos in multiple languages.
Orion: Perhaps the most important news from the event. Meta showed off a prototype that has all the power of an AR headset packed into the compact form factor of ordinary glasses. You’ll be able to interact with 3D holograms of friends and family. And a wrist-based neural interface will let you perform different actions just by thinking and making hand gestures.
Though still far from release, the first-of-its-kind device could be Mark Zuckerberg’s answer to the iPhone. Developed in secret for nearly a decade, Meta isn’t just building a new gadget but an entirely new general-purpose platform that could transform how we interact with the world.

Should you use an AI-ready workstation vs cloud-based development?
Digital Engineering 24/7 recently explained why onsite AI-ready workstations – with powerful high-end NVIDIA RTX(™)GPUs, and high-speed storage – beat out cloud-based AI development.
Here’s why:
Performance: Workstations avoid timely data transfers, network latency, and local bandwidth limitations–especially those with the latest NVIDIA RTX(™)GPUs
Cost: Onsite allows for unlimited iteration and testing for a one-time, fixed cost
Privacy: Developing locally makes it easier to follow data regulations and minimize security risks
Interested? Dell Precision AI-ready workstations are ranked #1 in the world, and run with the latest NVIDIA RTX(™) GPUs.

OpenAI execs depart as the company undergoes major restructuring

On Wednesday, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati suddenly announced she’s stepping down, sending shockwaves through the AI community. Murati said that after more than six years with the company, she’s ready to focus on personal projects.
But as the saying goes, when it rains it pours. A few hours later, OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew and VP of Research Barret Zoph both announced their departures as well.
An unexpected report added new layers of complexity to the story: In what could be the biggest shakeup since the startup’s 2015 founding, sources told Reuters that OpenAI is finalizing a plan to transform into a for-profit company. CEO Sam Altman will also reportedly get equity in the company for the first time.
It’s far from clear what impact these changes will have on the ChatGPT maker. Evolving their structure to a for-profit entity may make it easier for OpenAI to operate in certain aspects. But the departure of key figures like Murati will surely feel like a blow.
