TODAY IN AI

1. Happy second birthday, ChatGPT: Days after ChatGPT’s second anniversary, OpenAI is already making moves for 2025. CFO Sarah Friar told the Financial Times the startup is considering running ads for the first time in an effort to boost revenue, although those plans aren’t set in stone. Meanwhile, OpenAI says it’s on track to reach 1 billion users by next year — about the same amount as Meta’s Messenger service.
2. Data centers are energy hogs, but what if AI could be part of the solution? Startup Orbital Materials used AI to develop a new substance that sponges up carbon inside data centers, making them cleaner and more energy efficient. In 2025, it’ll be used for the first time at an Amazon server center. Next up, Orbital plans to develop materials that can do the same for Amazon’s water usage and chip cooling technologies.
3. Another Chinese model outsmarts OpenAI’s o1-preview: Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba unveiled a new version of its Qwen chatbot that it says beats OpenAI’s state-of-the-art reasoning model across multiple benchmarks. Just like o1, Qwen with Questions (QwQ) breaks down problems into smaller steps to catch its own mistakes. It’s the latest chain-of-thought model to come out of China, joining DeepSeek’s R1-Lite-Preview and Peking University’s LLaVA-o1.
4. Turning screenshots into 3D worlds: AI ‘Godmother’ Fei-Fei Li’s startup just showed off its first project. World Labs’ new model lets users generate interactive worlds based on screenshots — essentially letting you walk through the frame of your favorite painting or turn an AI-generated image into a fully navigable 3D world. Its practical uses include letting animation studios stage characters at any angle with consistent lighting, something that previously took hours or days.

FROM THE FRONTIER
A new AI-first browser could be coming early next year
Source: The Browser Company
The Browser Company gained a cult following by flipping the script on what an internet browser is supposed to look like. Its Arc platform features vertical tabs that can be embedded inside each other to cut down on clutter.
Now, in its typical idiosyncratic fashion, the startup is building an entirely new browser from scratch — this time with AI at its core. Expected to release early next year, Dia wants to rethink how we interact with our computers:
For example, it’ll turn the blinking line that greets us each time we begin a new email or an internet search into a generative text box that can fill in the blank as we type
It’ll also be able to move seamlessly across apps: You’ll be able to copy a list of Amazon items directly into an email without needing to manually copy and paste each one
Or, do just the opposite — add items from an email directly into your Amazon shopping cart
Finally, it’ll have built-in memory, meaning you can ask it to call up old docs or websites simply by describing them
