1. OpenAI’s latest competitor could be its former CTO: The best of friends make for the fiercest of rivals, it would appear. The Information reported yesterday that recently departed CTO Mira Murati is talking to OpenAI employees about joining her new venture, despite being an advisor to the company.

2. Beyond Presence wants to bring you lifelike avatars: The startup is cooking up hyper-realistic digital twins that can chat in real time using just your smartphone. Founded by Awais Shafique, who recently sold his previous AI venture to Meta, Beyond Presence wants to disrupt everything from customer service to e-learning.

3. Microsoft’s AI gets lab coats and stethoscopes: Doctors do much more than see patients or perform exams. They also have to complete hours of tedious paperwork each day. Microsoft’s new healthcare agent will soon be able to automate that process so physicians can spend more time with patients. The platform can sift through medical records, schedule appointments, and even assign patients to clinical trials.

Adobe unveils video model, AI-powered Photoshop, and more

If you’re a creator, AI isn’t something to fear — but something to embrace. That’s the case Adobe made at this week’s MAX conference in Miami, where we’re reporting on the dozens of new AI-powered features coming to the software company’s creativity-focused apps.

Its new tools let artists use AI as a helpful assistant — without taking their place altogether. Here’s a look at the biggest AI announcements we saw at MAX.

A new Firefly video model:

• Generate clips via text prompts — or extend shots you’ve taken yourself (i.e. turn a five-second clip into a 10-second one)

• Firefly was trained only on licensed content, making it the first-ever “commercially safe” video model

GenAI comes to Photoshop, Premiere, and other apps:

• Fill any shape with an AI-generated image or pattern that matches the style and color palette of your work

• Use AI to detect objects and change their background — or remove them from the scene; this is something that takes hours to do manually

• For example, with just one click, you can make a character in a video appear in black and white while the background remains in color

What else?

• Project Concept: A mood board that lets you combine elements from different images to generate new ones

• GenStudio: Use AI to create ad campaigns, generate alternative ads, and track their performance

💭 Team Work: To boost productivity in all divisions, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said he’s looking to bolster his teams with 100 million AI assistants.

💩 BS Meter: Meta's AI chief Yann LeCun says the idea that AI could pose an existential threat is "complete BS." He added that current AI models lack the intelligence needed for such concerns.

🤖 Home Bots: A startup called Kind Humanoid is building humanoid robots in a Palo Alto garage. Unlike most robotics companies that focus on industrial applications, they're all about creating home caretaker robots.

🐰 Furry Friend: Moflin, a fuzzy pet robot developed by Casio has finally gone to market. Meant to help relieve stress, it can change moods and even form attachments to its “humans.”
