Apple joins the AI party with new M3 chips and Macs

Apple

While Microsoft and Google have been showcasing their AI products for months, Apple has been unusually quiet. And finally we may know why, as Apple shows off its new M3 chips which come with serious AI chops.

Apple’s new MacBook Pros might have stolen the show at their Scary Fast event this week, but it’s what’s under the hood of these computers that’s got everyone in AI to sit up and take note.

Key insights directly from the press release:

  • Support for up to 128GB of memory on these chips unlocks workflows previously not possible on a laptop, such as AI developers working with even larger transformer models with billions of parameters.

  • The Neural Engine is up to 60% faster than in the M1 family of chips, making AI/ML workflows even faster while keeping data on device to preserve privacy. Super helpful for image and video work.

  • On the M3 Max, the 40-core GPU is up to 50 percent faster than M1 Max.

The announcement comes at a key time for Apple, as competitors race to build faster chips. Chipmaker Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon X, a PC chip that it claims is better than Apple’s M2 processor.

AI AT WORK

AI agents are about to go mainstream. How will they affect workers and their jobs?

The best way to understand what’s next in technology is to see what the scientists and hackers are tinkering with. And lately, AI agents — programs that can make decisions or perform a service based on their environment — look set to take the stage as the next major AI innovation.

AI agents go beyond what chatbots like ChatGPT can do by talking and collaborating with other apps and websites to accomplish a task. Over the last year, researchers have been able to get software agents to do a host of different tasks like:

  • Play video games

  • Create a virtual interactive town where agents simulate human behavior

  • Simulate the roles of software engineers in a company

While the tech hasn’t yet seen a working breakthrough comparable to ChatGPT, it’s hypothetically capable of both replacing and assisting in tasks that currently require human effort, like:

  • Edit calendars and schedule appointments

  • Order food and supplies online

  • Enter and analyze data, and share insights through emails and other communication channels autonomously

While no one can predict the future with certainty, here are a few potential outcomes in the event that AI agents go mainstream:

  • Assistance: AI agents are sophisticated enough to automate low-level tasks like generating and sharing action items from a meeting, but not advanced enough to execute action items resulting from these meetings.

  • Replacement: These agents are so advanced that they can outright replace large parts of human jobs. In this scenario, people are either freed up do more important work at their jobs, or they get replaced outright and have to find other jobs.

  • New jobs: Automation creates new types of jobs that only humans can do. Alternatively, the bar for entrepreneurship may be lowered as people hire AI agents and use them as cheap labor to build products and companies.

  • Nothing: AI agents could, of course, turn out to be all hype and no substance.
