It seems like an eternity ago, but as recently as 2020 Nvidia was widely regarded as a small-time tech company best known for building graphics cards for PC video games. But times are changing.

Nvidia’s stock price has gone from a low of almost $50 in 2020 to an all-time high of almost $750 — a roughly 15x increase in less than 5 years that briefly made it the fourth most valuable company in the US yesterday, ahead of Amazon and other major companies.

And it’s no secret that the monstrous surge in the company’s stock price is down to its AI chip business. The company’s high-end H100 graphics processing units (GPUs) power some of the world’s most powerful AI models and applications like ChatGPT and GPT-4, and go for as much as $40,000 a piece — and companies need thousands of GPUs to train their AI models.

Fun fact: the last time Nvidia was more valuable than Amazon was back in 2002. And Nvidia isn’t the only company from the dotcom era riding the AI hype train. Microsoft recently surpassed Apple to become the most valuable company in the US.

The Windows maker’s cloud business is experiencing a major boom thanks to AI. The company announced a 30% increase in Azure revenue last quarter, largely thanks to demand for its AI could services and its partnership with OpenAI. The news will come as an unpleasant surprise to Amazon’s AWS, the current leader in the cloud market which is playing catch up to Microsoft in AI services for the cloud.

AI is now deeply embedded in marketing teams

According to marketing tech company Instapage’s State of AI Marketing Report which surveyed 200+ marketers across multiple industries, AI is becoming deeply embedded in marketing workflows, with 95.8% of respondents saying they use AI in their jobs every day.

47% of marketers surveyed reported they are using AI save at least 3 hours a day of work, with 55.1% of marketers reporting that AI-powered tools have integrated deeply into their daily workflow.

AI IN SPORTS

Big tech meets big hits: How AI is transforming sports and player safety

The NFL is counting on AI to be the game changer, as Amazon scores a big partnership with football’s governing body to tackle player safety. The two organizations are partnering to build a "Digital Athlete," a virtual representation of an NFL player that can be used to better predict and prevent player injuries by analyzing player actions during training and games.

But the NFL isn’t the only sport where AI is making a difference. Major League Baseball uses Statcast, an AI-powered analytics tool that uses 15 million data points to help teams and fans develop a deeper understanding of player performance by analyzing player movement, launch speeds, and other key metrics.

In other sports, teams are using AI to drive performance off the court. The Milwaukee Bucks franchise in the NBA is reportedly using artificial intelligence to enhance their marketing efforts and build a stronger bond with their fans. In addition to optimizing the ticket purchasing experience with AI, the Bucks have also launched a chatbot called Emma to handle fan questions.
