💡 Insight of the day: Why we shouldn’t fear AI
We’re in the midst of AI spookiness. Everyone left, right, and center is telling us that AI is a threat: job loss, inequality, robot army - you name it.
But how real are these threats? And how concerned should we be?
Marc Andreessen, Founder of the first internet browser and one half of the famous venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, just wrote a groundbreaking article addressing all these concerns.
Here are a few direct quotes from the article that answer all of the major questions about AI safety:
Will AI take all of our jobs?
“…technology empowers people to be more productive. This causes the prices for existing goods and services to fall, and for wages to rise. This in turn causes economic growth and job growth, while motivating the creation of new jobs and new industries.“
In short, no. AI is likely going to increase productivity by automating certain tasks, while allowing us to pursue newer ones.
Will AI lead to inequality"?
“This is not to say that inequality is not an issue in our society. It is, it’s just not being driven by technology, it’s being driven by the reverse, by the sectors of the economy that are the most resistant to new technology, that have the most government intervention to prevent the adoption of new technology like AI – specifically housing, education, and health care.”
Will AI kill us?
“AI is not a living being that has been primed by billions of years of evolution to participate in the battle for the survival of the fittest, as animals are, and as we are. It is math – code – computers, built by people, owned by people, used by people, controlled by people. The idea that it will at some point develop a mind of its own and decide that it has motivations that lead it to try to kill us is a superstitious handwave.“
The actual risk of not pursuing AI
“China has a vastly different vision for AI than we do – they view it as a mechanism for authoritarian population control, full stop.”
“The single greatest risk of AI is that China wins global AI dominance and we – the United States and the West – do not.“
There a lot of other gems in the article that I think you’ll love. Whether you agree or disagree with Andreessen, it’s certainly worth understanding the counterargument against fearing AI. We recommend you read the full thing here →
