Welcome back, Superhuman
AI devices have struggled to get off the ground this year. But Wednesday’s Galaxy Unpacked event proved that Samsung’s approach — infusing AI into tried-and-true devices, from flip phones to earbuds — might just be the best strategy. Your move, Apple.

Samsung doubles down on AI with new smart ring and phone lineup
Source: Samsung/Screenshot
Last month, all eyes were on Apple as it revealed long-awaited AI features, which are finally headed to iOS sometime next year. Now, Samsung is here to remind Apple of an inconvenient truth: While iPhone owners are still waiting for their AI updates, similar features have been available on Galaxy devices for months — and now there’s even more where that came from.
Here are the biggest AI announcements from Wednesday’s Galaxy Unpacked event:
The company showed off a new AI-enabled smart ring that will be able to track health, fitness, and sleep data, then provide you with an “Energy Score” that estimates how prepared you are for the day ahead; unlike competitors like Oura, you won’t need a subscription to use those features
The latest Galaxy Watch Ultra will get similar health features as well as a redesigned bioactive sensor; additionally, it’s now an FDA-approved device for detecting sleep apnea
Galaxy phones — including the new Z Flip6 and Fold6 — are getting new Gemini integration, while the Circle to Search tool, which lets users find information about an object or piece of text that they’ve circled, will now be able to solve math problems on-the-fly
Sketch to Image, meanwhile, lets you instantly turn crude drawings into “sophisticated art pieces”
The next iteration of Samsung’s Galaxy Buds will be equipped with AI features, including adaptive noise control and siren detection capabilities
If that wasn’t enough, there’s also AI-assisted photo and video editing, real-time translations for phone calls, and a suggested replies feature for texting
You can visit Samsung’s Newsroom for a more in-depth look at all of the AI features coming to the company’s latest devices.

How to create your own calendar using Claude 3.5
Go to Claude’s website and log in.
Make sure you select Claude 3.5 Sonnet as your model.
Write in your prompt in the prompt box:
Create a google calendar clone.
Once you get the basic calendar. Use the prompt to refine it and add as much functionalities as you want. Here are some I have added:
Make it interactive and deletable so i can delete values.
Add a button to add an event into calendar.
Using these prompts, you’ll get a calendar with basic functionalities in it. You can add a lot more functionalities.
For instance, you can add drag-and-drop functionality for moving or resizing events, color coding or categorization for events, time selection for events, and much more.
You can download the code and run it to access your own customized calendar.

Nothing to See Here: As regulators investigate tech companies over antitrust concerns, Microsoft and Apple both announced they will no longer take seats on OpenAI’s board.
Power Play: In the biggest deal of its kind since 2014, AMD is acquiring AI company Silo in an attempt to catch up to chip powerhouse Nvidia.
Trial and Error: Anthropic’s Claude is introducing a new feature called Evaluate that lets developers try out multiple prompts at once to speed up complicated coding tasks.
Treasure Trove: Andreessen Horowitz reportedly plans to stockpile around 20,000 GPUs — the same amount used to train xAI’s Grok model — in order to land more deals with AI startups.
😄 One Fun Thing: A Tom’s Guide reporter recently had a strange encounter with a couple of AI voicebots. He paired a newer model, Moshi Chat, with the emotion-focused EVI to see what would happen. But instead of engaging in a conversation, Moshi emitted a bizarre “scream.” When asked why it had made the creepy noise, Moshi said it wasn’t sure, explaining that “it was just a sound.”
🧠 Brain Food: A Pittsburgh-based startup called Skild AI just raised $300 million from Jeff Bezos, Softbank, and others. It’s working on a universal brain that could fit inside both humanoid robots and canine-like quadrupeds to help them carry out a variety of tasks, from household chores to manual labor.

AI & SCIENCE
OpenAI partners with Los Alamos Lab to study AI’s risks and rewards
Source: Los Alamos National Laboratory
OpenAI just announced it’s teaming up with the Los Alamos National Laboratory to conduct a series of new AI experiments. Yep, that Los Alamos — where scientists designed the first atomic weapons under the guidance of J. Robert Oppenheimer during the Manhattan Project.
But have no fear: Today’s lab bears little resemblance to the one from the 1940s, and OpenAI’s collaboration has nothing to do with defense technologies. Instead, the project will explore ways that AI could be used to help biologists in the field. It’s allegedly the first time AI experiments have been conducted inside a fully-functioning laboratory at this scale.
What sorts of experiments are in the works? One involves using LLMs to help non-experts carry out biological tests, like modifying E. coli bacteria to create insulin. Researchers could one day use GPT-4o’s speech and vision capabilities to help troubleshoot equipment errors or to check the accuracy of complicated procedures. OpenAI says that eventually, AI may also be used for more hands-on processes, like propagating cell cultures or introducing foreign genetic material into host organisms.
Safety-first: While Los Alamos no longer conducts large-scale arms testing, some AI experts feel that AI is just as powerful as nuclear devices — and should be treated with the same level of care. So as much as the collaboration will explore new uses for AI, Los Alamos says it’ll also flag potential safety concerns so that the government can defend against them.
“Many great things can happen, but we want to make sure that if any risks do get introduced that we can at least identify and mitigate them before they become a problem,” Los Alamos deputy group leader Nick Generous told Axios.
