Welcome back, Superhuman

AI startup Magic has unveiled a new AI model that can devour roughly 750 books or 10 million lines of code in a single prompt. This could have deep implications for how we interact with AI apps and what we can use them for.

P.S. Iā€™m down with a cold today so the newsletter is slightly shorter than usual and Iā€™ve cut out the tools and image sections at the bottom. Those sections will be back next issue.

Magic AI unveils a model with an ultra-long context window

The name of Magic AIā€™s new foundation model is a bit misleading ā€” to say the least. Despite its diminutive title, LTM-2-mini can handle prompts of up to 100 million tokens, or roughly 10 million lines of code, giving it one of the largest windows of any model.

What can it be used for?

  • Like other coding-focused models, it can automate complicated programming tasks and spot errors in long strings of code

  • But its larger context window means it wonā€™t easily forget the code it was previously trained on

  • That accuracy unlocks new opportunities for software engineers

  • For instance, Magic demonstrated how the model can quickly build a custom calculator or password strength checker

What else is Magic working on? Itā€™s partnering with Nvidia on a massive supercomputer that would dwarf the current record-holder ā€” the US Department of Energyā€™s Aurora system. How will they do it? By stringing together tens of thousands of Nvidiaā€™s state-of-the-art GB200 chips.

Riding the wave: Magic just got a boost from Atlassian, CapitalG, Jane Street, and several other VCs in one of the 30 biggest funding rounds for a US company so far this year, according to Crunchbase figures. The company joins a growing list of AI coding platforms that have attracted significant investment in recent months.

  • AI Bandwagon: OpenAI is reportedly in talks for a new funding round that could include participation from Apple and Nvidia. Itā€™s a sign that the Sam Altman-led startup may have a big announcement around the corner.

  • Silicon Showdown: California legislators have passed the controversial AI Safety Bill, which would likely be a thorn in the side of Silicon Valley firms if approved by the stateā€™s governor.

  • New Toys: The popular text-to-image platform Midjourney is building a team that will focus exclusively on developing new hardware projects.

  • Under the Hood: OpenAI and Anthropic agreed to partner with the US government to collaboratively test new models before theyā€™re released to the public ā€” a process that allegedly began this summer with OpenAIā€™s GPT-4o successor.

šŸ§  Brain Food: Australian researchers created a simplistic AI model with a synthetic jelly, then taught it how to play Pong. Rather than relying on an algorithm, the hydrogel used a basic form of ā€œmemoryā€ to pick up on patterns and implement them into its gameplay. Its a groundbreaking step toward creating AI built from real-world materials.

How to convert 2D images to 3D motion with AI

  • Go to Immersity AI and Sign up to get up to 100 credits.

  • Now Upload your 2D image and select 2D to 3D motion.

  • Adjust animation style, amount of motion, animation length, focus point, edge dilation and more from the editing panel on right side.

  • Once done, you can export your creation by clicking on Export button on top right side.

  • You can download it in MP4, GIF, or PNG format and share it with others.

For the example above, I have uploaded a 2D Rubikā€™s cube image and converted it into a 3D animation.

AI helps detect heart attacks years in advance

Source: Caristo Diagnostics

UK researchers say theyā€™ve come up with a way to estimate someoneā€™s heart attack risk up to 10 years in advance with the help of AI. Developed by a company called Caristo Diagnostics, the model can pick up on ā€œbiological processes that are invisible to the human eye,ā€ including symptoms that CT scans canā€™t detect, Oxford Professor Keith Channon told the BBC.

The technology saves lives by giving patients far more time to treat underlying conditions and adjust their lifestyles. It could eventually be used to treat strokes and diabetes, too.
