Berkeley startup wants to give LLMs long-term memory

Source: Letta

All of us forget things from time to time, but we can at least keep track of basic facts, like our names, addresses, and birthdays. AI models aren’t so lucky: Nearly all of them suffer from a bad case of amnesia. No matter how many times you give them context about your life, they’re bound to forget it by your next session.

Letta, the brainchild of Berkeley PhD students Sarah Wooders and Charles Packer, is tackling a major headache in the AI world: Helping AI models actually remember things, including your past conversations and preferences. Several major investors, including Alphabet’s Jeff Dean and Hugging Face’s Clem Delangue, have contributed $10M to the project, resulting in a $70M valuation.

Why it’s important: Long-term memory opens up a world of possibilities, from more personalized customer support bots to sophisticated healthcare symptom-tracking apps that learn and adapt to individual patients. By solving the memory problem, Letta could help unlock the next level of personalized, intelligent applications capable of interacting with the physical world.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Can AI scaling models continue through 2030?

Source: Epoch AI

AI models are scaling at a rate of about 4x per year — representing one of the fastest growth trajectories of any technology in modern history. That’s led to a major debate: Can LLMs keep progressing at that pace, or is their scale destined to level off?

A new analysis from Epoch AI hints at an answer. The research organization considered factors like power constraints, chip capabilities, and data scarcity. It ultimately found that there aren’t any barriers big enough to slow progress through 2030, as long as AI companies are willing to up their investments proportionally.

“If this continues, we could expect to see training runs 10,000x larger than GPT-4’s by the end of the decade,” the organization wrote. To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of the jump we saw between GPT-2 and GPT-4.
