AI ‘godfather’ says fears of existential threat are overblown

AI pioneer and Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun dismissed the idea of AI posing a significant threat to humanity as “preposterously ridiculous”.

According to LeCun, worries of AI an takeover are an overblown projection of human nature onto machines.

Alongside Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio - with whom LeCun received the Turing Award in 2018 for breakthroughs in AI - the three are known as ‘the godfathers of AI. It is to be noted that Bengio and Hinton disagree with LeCun.

LeCun dismisses the notion that a super-intelligent AI could escape human control as unrealistic, stating there will always be measures to prevent such an event — such as the ability to turn off the AI.

LeCun views AI in a positive light, believing that it could herald a "new renaissance for humanity”.
