• The new model will be several times more powerful than Meta’s current leading model, Llama 2.

New research: ChatGPT’s water consumption needs could be an environmental problem

Just 5 ChatGPT queries can consume as much as 500ml (or 16 oz) of water, according to a new study from researchers at The University of California.

The research aimed to look at the environmental impact of AI processing in data centers and analyzed Microsoft’s Iowa data center to make their calculations. Microsoft’s water consumption rose 34% from 2021 to 2022 to nearly 1.7 billion gallons. Google reported a 20% increase in water consumption over the same period.

The researchers and some local authorities expressed concern with regard to the environmental impact of the increased water usage required to train AI models. Big tech companies have also acknowledged the need to be more efficient with their water consumption.
