Scientists discover first new class of antibiotics in over 60 years with the help of AI
A new scientific discovery could help save millions of lives around the world every year. Scientists at MIT and Harvard have discovered a new class of antibiotics with the help of AI, a breakthrough which could potentially lead to medicines that can overcome drug-resistant bacteria.
The scientists used AI to screen millions of chemical compounds and discovered non-toxic compounds that are capable of killing two different types of drug-resistant bacteria. The scientists conducted further experiments in mice to demonstrate the effectiveness of these new compounds in practice.
Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health. The WHO estimates that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019, and contributed to an additional 4.95 million deaths.
Beyond the obvious benefit of saving millions of lives, overcoming antibiotic resistance could also have a significant economic impact. The World Bank estimates that antibiotic resistance could result in $ 1 trillion of additional healthcare costs by 2050, with an additional $ 1 trillion+ in annual GDP losses by 2030.
