TODAY IN AI

1. Christmas comes early at OpenAI: Sam Altman teased twelve days of “shipmas,” with the first major drop expected sometime today. “Each weekday, we will have a livestream with a launch or demo, some big ones and some stocking stuffers,” the OpenAI CEO wrote. While it’s anyone’s guess what will be announced, a full version of the reasoning-focused o1 as well as the long-awaited video model Sora are all but confirmed.

2. Another AI-first browser could go live soon: Berlin-based startup Deta is working on a platform called Surf that blurs the lines between a traditional browser, a file manager, and an AI chatbot. It’ll let you do things like ask a question about a YouTube video, then immediately scrub to the relevant clip. With plans to go public next year, Surf is following in the footsteps of the Browser Company’s recently-announced AI browser Dia, which is also expected in 2025.

3. NotebookLM leaders defect to start their own AI company: Three of the developers behind Alphabet’s surprise hit NotebookLM are reportedly leaving to launch a mysterious new company. The AI-powered study app went viral this year for its Audio Overviews feature, which lets users turn documents into lively, AI-generated podcasts. Details about the new startup are murky — we don’t even know its name yet — but the team confirmed it’ll create products that are “accessible, useful, and obvious to everyday people.”

DeepMind drops AI world generator and weather predictor on same day

DeepMind is embracing Giving Season with two major releases: First up, just days after Fei-Fei Li’s buzzy startup made a splash with a new AI-powered world generator, Alphabet has answered with its own interactive 3D platform. Like World Labs’ model, Genie 2 can generate interactive digital worlds based on screenshots alone.

There’s a reason why so many AI companies are coalescing around interactive 3D models: To build advanced AI agents, we first have to teach models how to navigate through our world, helping them pick up on things like physics and biology along the way. Letting agents explore a realistic, simulated space might be the fastest way to reach that milestone.

DeepMind isn’t stopping there: It also dropped GenCast, a forecasting model that can predict weather patterns up to 15 days in advance. The platform could be a literal lifesaver, giving us more time to prepare for severe storms. One researcher said it’s so powerful that it’s as if “we’ve made decades worth of improvements in one year,” beating one forecasting rival 97.2% of the time.
