OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is begging fans to “please chill” as AGI rumors reach a fever pitch. Meanwhile, his peers only turned up the heat at Davos this week, with some estimating that superintelligent models might be just a couple years away.

1. Shoot for the moon, land among the Stargate: President Trump announced a $500 billion AI infrastructure investment in the US – with the help of OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. Sam Altman, Masayoshi Son, and Larry Ellison joined Trump at the White House to unveil the initiative, which aims to create 100,000 US jobs and keep the US ahead of China in AI development. The group has already started construction of its first data center in Texas.

2. The AGI plot thickens: So much for hitting a scaling wall. Now, top researchers are hinting that AGI isn’t so far off after all. If that wasn’t enough, Axios just reported that Sam Altman is headed to Washington on Jan. 30 for a secret meeting with government officials. Altman tried to simmer things down, writing “We are not gonna deploy AGI next month, nor have we built it.” But critics pointed out that Altman himself has been one of the biggest drivers of the latest hype cycle.

3. Perplexity drops API for search: The AI search giant released a new platform called Sonar that lets coders build their own search products using “the fastest, cheapest API offering out there.” Unlike most models, Perplexity can access the web in real-time, arguably making it more accurate and relevant compared to rivals like Gemini and o1-preview. There’s also a Pro tier featuring a larger context window and 2x the citations.

• Now go to ‘Explore GPTs’ on the left.

AI steals the show at this year’s Davos meeting

If you’re a tech CEO, you were likely in one of two places this week: Either the presidential inauguration in D.C. — or the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. For at least the second year in a row, AI was the big talking point at Davos, where some of the world’s most powerful people gather to discuss global trends.

Here’s what we learned: 

• Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei hinted that his startup is working on a new “two-way” feature that would let you converse with the chatbot using your voice. It would probably look something like OpenAI’s Advanced Voice mode.

• Amodei also said he’s convinced that AI could surpass human intelligence in 2027, throwing yet another coal onto the AGI fire. He added that he’s more confident than ever that we’ve successfully gotten past last year’s scaling troubles.

• Nobel Prize-winning DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis revealed he expects to see the first clinical trials for AI-designed drugs start at some point this year.

• Mistral, one of Europe’s largest AI startups, shot down rumors that it’s being acquired by Microsoft, instead revealing that it plans to soon go public.

🔮 Futuristic Finance: Goldman Sachs is giving 10,000 employees access to its new AI assistant, which can help with tasks like summarizing emails and translating documents, with more advanced agentic features coming soon.

✨ Solid Bet: A new Deloitte survey found that nearly three-quarters of firms say they’ve met or exceeded their goals for return on investment thanks to AI, while 45% are building multi-agent systems, where different agents collaborate on complicated tasks.

📈 Markets: Tempus AI jumped a whopping 35.53% after releasing an app that can help patients access daily health metrics and medical records via “one unified platform.” Meta saw a modest 0.6% boost after a report showed it’s working on new Oakley-branded smart glasses, an AI watch, and earbuds equipped with cameras. But Apple fell 3.19% following more disappointing iPhone sales in China. That put Nvidia back on top as the world’s most valuable company.
