THE BIG INSIGHT

Amazon uses AI to create hand scan payment system

No wallet, no problem. Amazon has a payment system that scans your hand to make payments, enter you into venues, verify your age, and do more.

Named Amazon One, the technology is a combination of AI, cutting-edge biometrics, and optical engineering. The neural network (fancy word for AI) has learned from millions of images of artificial hands to increase accuracy. Amazon claims this helps it achieve higher accuracy than scanning two irises - a significant achievement if true.

The system scans your hand to create your palm signature and connects it to your credit card or Amazon account. Amazon claims that the system can recognize fake or replica hands and rejects them instantly with virtually 100% accuracy.

Amazon One is currently being released across 500+ Whole Foods Markets and dozens of stores, sports venues, grocers, convenience stores and entertainment venues.

RESEARCH

AI predicts chemicals’ smells from their structures

Based on molecular structures, researchers have developed an AI system that forecasts the aroma of compounds. It distinguishes scents using descriptive phrases and searches a Principal Odor Map (POM) for novel molecules after being trained on 5,000 odors. Its predictions match those of highly trained individuals. Although the technology may help the food and cleaning businesses, it fails to clarify the biological basis of human odor. Read more
