1. ‘Mind-blowing’ voice model takes social media by storm: It took just three months for a pair of Korean undergrads to go from knowing nothing about speech-based AI to unveiling a frontier voice model of their own. Toby Kim says he and his co-founder built a model that rivals ElevenLabs, Sesame, and NotebookLM’s podcast feature with zero funding and just 1.6B parameters to work with. 2. Character AI unveils its own video model: The chatbot platform will soon let you turn static AI-generated avatars into dynamic videos (examples here). AvatarFX can handle anything “from realistic humans to mythical creatures, and even inanimate objects with faces.” It’s a natural next step for the Google-aligned startup, which already has some of the highest engagement of any AI company. 3. AI beats top scientists on expert-level virology test: The Center for AI Safety, MIT’s Media Lab, and other institutions challenged PhD-level virologists to complete a tricky problem-solving quiz. Those scientists scored an average of 22.1%. Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro, meanwhile, scored 37.6%, and OpenAI’s o3 scored 43.8%. That means there’s now huge potential for AI to help us solve age-old biomedical problems — but it also raises the threat of models being misused to create bioweapons.

Anthropic predicts virtual employees are just a year away

AI companies are starting to talk about the elephant in the room: Agents are getting so good that it won’t be long until they start having a meaningful impact on the workforce.

Anthropic bets that could happen within the next year: The Claude-maker’s security chief, Jason Clinton, told Axios he’s already preparing for that reality. For example, the company is currently creating safeguards to protect against “rogue agents” who might unexpectedly tweak its code or share users’ personal details.

So far, most agents are being marketed as helpful companions. The goal isn’t to replace you but to make your job easier and more fulfilling.

But a new crop of startups is taking a very different approach: Kortix AI, which just introduced a new general AI agent, has the explicit goal of “replacing 70% of the human workforce with AI.” Meanwhile, AI researcher Tamay Besiroglu just launched a startup called Mechanize with plans to “enable the full automation of the economy.”

It remains to be seen whether this controversial approach can withstand public scrutiny. Either way, the race to build fully autonomous workers isn’t hypothetical anymore — it’s already well underway.
