Bloomberg: Apple plans to bring generative AI to all its devices

Think of all the big AI product announcements from this past year: OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot, Google’s Bard, Adobe’s Firefly, Github’s Copilot and Apple’s…? The company has been unusually quiet on the AI front in recent months when it comes to major product announcements.

And according to a new report from Bloomberg, that’s because Apple has been caught off guard and “flat-footed“ by the AI tools that have taken the tech industry by storm.

“There’s a lot of anxiety about this and it’s considered a pretty big miss internally,” said one person with knowledge of the matter, according to Bloomberg.

But the company is ramping up its AI efforts and spending will reportedly reach $1 Billion per year. Upcoming AI-powered efforts could include:

  • A new AI system that could power Siri

  • Autocomplete features for the Messages app

  • Generative AI features for development tools like Xcode

  • Auto-generated playlists for Apple Music

  • AI-powered features for productivity apps like Pages and Keynote

As demand for Nvidia’s AI chips goes off the charts, competitors are developing their own in-house solutions to power the future of AI and get a piece of the lucrative Gen AI market.

2 major recent advances:

  • IBM researchers have developed a new chip that could work much faster while consuming significantly less power. The chip does this by eliminating the need for frequently accessing external memory. One researcher called the energy efficiency “mind-blowing.“

  • Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will reportedly enable generative AI on the next generation of flagship smartphones. The chip could reportedly power Samsung’s next Galaxy S24 smartphone.

AI TUTORIAL

How to upscale images to super-high resolutions in Midjourney

Midjourney introduced a new feature for upscaling AI-generated art to higher resolutions — previously limited to 1024 x 1024 pixels.

Now, users can upscale images by 2x or 4x, reaching up to 4096 x 4096 pixels, ideal for larger prints and high-quality digital use. To achieve high resolution:

  • Go to your Midjourney Discord channel.

  • Now log in and write your desired image prompt.

  • Once you get the desired image, select Upscale (2x) or Upscale (4x) from the options given below.

  • For the image above, I’ve used the following prompt:

hyper realistic photograph, close up of a woman, reflection in her eye--v 5.2 --ar 16:9

Wait for the image to process and you’re done.
