Apple's plan to make AI updates more seamless

Welcome back, Superhuman

When a new version of an LLM gets released, we expect it to work better — not worse. But updates can also introduce new problems, forcing us to learn how to use a model all over again. Apple’s working on a method that would make the transition much easier.

Apple wants to make AI updates more seamless

If you’ve used LLMs long enough, you’ve probably come up against a pesky problem: Suddenly, your go-to prompt for completing a certain task no longer works. Or, maybe you’re trying out someone else’s prompt and you find that their method gives you a completely different result.

In many cases, updates are to blame for those inconsistencies: Developers fine-tune their models to cut down on hallucinations, glitches, and other problems. But every time there’s an update, some of that work gets undone. As a result, an LLM might struggle with certain things — from reasoning problems to writing tasks — that it previously excelled at.

What can we do about it? Apple researchers are trying to figure out a way to make the transition between old and new models easier to adjust to. It’s a tricky problem because negative flips — when an AI model gets wrong what it previously got right — are common even when an LLM’s training methods are kept exactly the same across generations.

How does it work? The researchers created a set of metrics that can be used to spot differences between each version of an LLM — in this case, Meta’s open-source Llama 1 and Llama 2. Then, using that data, they taught a specialized LLM known as a compatibility model how to flag discrepancies on its own. This approach slashed inconsistencies by about 40%.

What it means for you: Whenever there’s a new update, we often focus on a model’s number of parameters and tokens — or its performance across different benchmarks. But just as important is the experience of actually using that LLM. Apple’s research shows that tech companies are paying closer attention to the inconsistency problem and want to cut down on it.

  • Math Whiz: Microsoft is showing off a new model called SpreadsheetLLM that can help LLMs parse large datasets — a hint that new AI features could soon be coming to Excel.

  • Movie Magic: Alphabet is launching a new app that lets users embed custom, AI-generated videos into their multimedia presentations.

  • A-Eyewear: Meta and Ray-Ban say the latest model of their AI-powered smart glasses is catching on. They’ve sold more units in two months than they did over the past two years.

  • iMessage Evolved: Apple’s Messages app will soon let users schedule texts in advance. It’ll also support RCS, making it easier for iPhone owners to communicate with Android users.

😄One Fun Thing: The digital bird feeder Bird Buddy can already identify the species of each warbler that lands on your feeder. But a new AI feature called Name That Bird will soon help enthusiasts spot repeat visitors — individual birds that return again and again over weeks or months. Users can even give their feathered friends distinctive names to help tell them apart.

AI & SPACE FLIGHT

How drone races help prepare AI for spaceflight

Source: Delft University of Technology

Imagine trying to convince your colleagues that you’ve decided to pivot your career to AI drone racing — all in the name of science. Researchers at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands are doing just that: Pitting AI drones against each other in a series of time trials. But it’s not just for fun.

The tests have an important real-world application: They can help teach AI systems how to traverse unpredictable environments. In fact, a team at the European Space Agency (ESA) thinks the experiments could one day help spacecraft navigate outer space on their own.

Here’s how it works:

  • The neural-network-piloted drones weave through a complex obstacle course known as the “Cyber Zoo”

  • Over time, they learn how to react to different scenarios on-the-fly

  • “When it comes to racing obviously the main scarce resource is time,” said ESA coordinator Dario Izzo

  • “But we can use that as a substitute for other variables that a space mission might have to prioritize, such as propellant mass” — or the weight of the fuel used to power a spacecraft

Why drones? For one, their neural networks only need to focus on one thing — navigation — so they don’t require a ton of computational power. That’s important because, as we wrote about earlier this month, most shuttles use durable, low-tech chips that can withstand the stresses of space travel.

What makes it unique? At this point, most space agencies pre-program shuttles before they head into the cosmos. But lots of factors — from unpredictable gravitational changes to subtle measurement discrepancies — can throw a wrench in those plans. Using AI for real-time navigation can help spacecraft regulate their trajectory mid-flight, instead of needing to reprogram the mission from scratch.
