AI creators are mixing and matching tools for better results

LA-based creator Neural Viz is breaking ground with some of the first AI-generated videos that viewers say they find genuinely entertaining — not just technically impressive. His Unsolved Mysteries spoof investigates the strange behaviors of the long-gone “human” race. It’s a high-quality production with witty writing, retro visuals, and impressive voice acting — and it’s already garnered tens of thousands of views.

Neural Viz is part of a growing group of enthusiasts who combine different AI tools together to get results that far exceed what would be possible with just a single platform. This approach takes a lot of trial and error — experimenting with different apps, taking the best features from each, and stringing them together to create something that’s more than the sum of its parts. Here’s Neural Viz’s typical workflow:

• Write script

• Generate images in Midjourney (MJ)

• Create voices in Elevenlabs that align with character imagery

• Lay voices down in an edit

• Send voices to Hedra with character imagery from MJ

• Make B-roll in Luma and Runway

• Create music with Udio

How it’s made: It takes around a dozen hours — and $100 in monthly subscriptions — for Neural Viz to make a two- to three-minute video. “But even that cost is nothing compared to what an actual production would be,” he told Superhuman.

Relying on AI means you don’t need a set, a production crew, or permits. “It’s giving people the option to tell a story that they might not have otherwise gotten to tell.” Neural Viz still writes the script himself, using 10 years of experience in the film industry. It goes to show that the best AI might need a human touch to really shine.

Who controls the most powerful AI chips?

Researchers at Oxford University analyzed where the most powerful AI chips are distributed throughout the world. The US has the highest concentration of Nvidia H-100s, the most powerful AI chips on the market — partly because it already had the infrastructure to accommodate the chips when they were released in 2022. They’re about nine times faster than A-100s when it comes to training new AI models.

China can’t access H-100s due to embargoes, but it’s tried to make up for it by accruing lots of less-powerful A100s instead. The oldest of the bunch, V100s, are more widely distributed around the world, including in places like South America and Africa.

How to transform image backgrounds with AI

• Go to Recraft AI and sign up to get credits.

• Select How To Remove Backgrounds from the projects. It will take you to the editor.

• Now upload an image to change its background. Once uploaded, click on Remove Background at the top.

• Now click on the image (without background) and write in your prompt to create a new background and click on Recraft.

For example, I uploaded the image on the left, removed the background, and prompted it to change the background to sunset on the beach.

• You can generate up to 4 images at a time, choose color palettes, select different styles, and much more.

• Inference Inflation: OpenAI has considered charging as much as $2,000 per month for access to its upcoming reasoning-focused models, including Strawberry and Orion.

• AI Butler: Chinese fintech company Ant Group is launching an AI assistant that will be able to order meals and hail taxis autonomously with text or voice commands.

• Helping Hand: A new study shows that programmers who use AI-based coding assistants are on average 26% more productive than their non-AI peers.

😄 One Fun Thing: My Drama, a streaming app that features dozens of short-form soap operas, is experimenting with a tool that lets users talk to an AI version of their favorite characters. Ukraine-based startup Holywater thinks the new feature will help add to the immersion of each show.

🏆 Power Players: Time has just released its second-ever “100 Most Influential People in AI” list, which includes 91 people who didn’t appear on last year’s list. Big names like Sam Altman, Jensen Huang, and Mark Zuckerberg appear, but so do a host of lesser-known thinkers, artists, and activists.
