THE BIG INSIGHT

Billionaire CEO advocates for US developing AI weapons

Alex Karp, the billionaire CEO of Palantir, wrote an Op-Ed in The New York Times where he advocated for the development of AI weapons.

Karp says that the development of artificial intelligence has brought us to a critical crossroads, where we must decide whether we should proceed with its advancement or exercise caution due to its potential impact on humanity.

He advocates for swift action and building a technical and regulatory framework, but also warns that “Our adversaries will not pause to indulge in theatrical debates about the merits of developing technologies with critical military and national security applications. They will proceed.“

Despite some large AI companies making voluntary commitments to limit AI developments, experts like Yann LeCun, Bill Gates, and Marc Andreessen have echoed Karp's stance more broadly.

Palantir has a significant stake in this issue, given their role as a major tech provider for the military.
