Welcome back, Superhuman

OpenAI isn’t going down without a fight. On the same day that Meta released the fully customizable Llama 3.1, OpenAI announced it’d give developers new tools to fine-tune its latest LLM, GPT-4o Mini. Coincidence? We think not.

OpenAI will now let developers customize GPT-4o Mini

OpenAI couldn’t even wait a day. Hours after Meta launched Llama 3.1 — the most powerful open source model to date — OpenAI announced a new set of customization features for its latest LLM, GPT-4o Mini. It means that developers who already pay for access to the efficiency-oriented model will now be able to customize and fine-tune it to their needs.

Some context: OpenAI tends to closely guard its models, believing that to be a safer alternative to Meta’s wide open approach. Some companies want to work with OpenAI for that very reason: It gives them a solid foundation to build on top of, including built-in security features. But other developers, especially those who are already well-versed in AI, might find OpenAI's strategy too limiting.

The announcement signals a bit of a shakeup: It shows that OpenAI is willing to compromise in order to find a healthy balance between closed and open source philosophies. The idea: We’ll keep your data secure while still giving you plenty of tools to create new things. Finding that sweet spot could be the key to making sure Meta doesn’t pull too far ahead.

The new state of play: It’s too early to tell where Llama 3.1 will land in the industry-leading LMSYS leaderboard. But by all accounts, it’ll end up somewhere near the top — potentially even first place. For now though, the top of the chart is occupied by two OpenAI models. You guessed it: GPT-4o and GPT-4o Mini.

Less is more: What’s notable is that according to the latest update, the mini version of GPT-4o is now virtually tied with the base model — while also being about 20 times cheaper. It signals an industry shift, especially as AI startups face mounting energy costs. In the coming months, efficiency could be just as big of a selling point as overall performance.

AI & DRIVING

How AI-powered drifting could help prevent weather-related accidents

Source: Toyota Research Institute

“Look ma, no hands!” Scientists at Toyota and Stanford are teaching sports cars how to autonomously weave around tight corners in tandem. A video shows a pair of AI-powered Toyota Supras drifting in near synchronicity — coming within mere feet of each other, but never colliding.

Who said research had to be boring? Besides getting to live out their “Fast and Fury” fantasy, the engineers say their study has a practical purpose, too. With expert drifting skills under its belt, the model could one day help drivers during weather emergencies. For example, it’d be able to detect when a driver is losing control in a rain or snowstorm and help him or her regain traction before it’s too late. That could significantly cut down on the 5.9 million accidents — and 5,000 deaths — that occur each year due to the weather.

What’s new? The Toyota Research Institute’s Avinash Balachandran says it’s the first time a neural network has been trained to accurately mimic the driving movements of another car. “The following vehicle is actually reacting in real-time to the first vehicle and avoiding crashing,” he explained. “It allows us to build a system that’s actually improving over time, much like an expert driver would.”

Just how precise is it? The neural model was trained to make as many as 50 decisions per second. The way the cars communicate with each other though is surprisingly low-tech. All they need is a good WiFi connection.

  • Robo Rollout: Elon Musk claims Tesla will start using its humanoid robots internally as soon as next year. They’ll allegedly go on sale starting in 2026.

  • AI Up Close: Meta will soon bring AI capabilities to its Quest headsets. Users in the US and Canada will get to try an experimental version of the feature starting in August.

😄 One Fun Thing: An autonomous delivery robot from the Lockheed Martin-backed startup Vayu Robotics is hitting the streets. The “One” will drive alongside store employees as they stock it full of merchandise. It’ll then be able to cruise along bike lanes, sidewalks, and streets at up to 20mph, dropping goods off directly in front of shoppers’ homes.

🧠 Brain Food: MIT researchers are turning to AI for help figuring out how LLMs make decisions. A model will first be trained to perform experiments on other LLMs. It’ll then be able to analyze those results and come up with theories for how different vision-based models reason through problems.
