THE BIG PICTURE

Red Carpet Rumble: Actors say Hollywood studios want their AI replicas — forever

In a plot twist straight out of a Black Mirror episode, the chief negotiator of the Hollywood actors association SAG-AFTRA alleged that studios want to own image rights of actors forever and use them in AI generations — without actors getting paid for it.

Chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said “…they proposed that our background performers should be able to be scanned, get one day’s pay, and their companies should own that scan, their image, their likeness and should be able to use it for the rest of eternity on any project they want, with no consent and no compensation.”

The President of SAG-AFTRA advised actors to stand tall against the proposal.

Will life imitate art as Hollywood's reality mirrors the creepy plot of a recent Black Mirror episode about a studio replicating Selma Hayek’s image using AI — or will actors be able to control their digital identities?
