THE BIG STORY
ChatGPT beats 200 Wharton MBAs on creativity test
AI is pretty good at generating ideas. But how good is it? And is it better than humans? University of Pennsylvania professors Christian Terwiesch and Karl Ulrich put these questions to the test in a new study where they compared 200 Wharton MBA students to ChatGPT.
They asked both students and ChatGPT the same question: “generate an idea for a new product or service appealing to college students that could be made available for $50 or less.” and judged the creativity of answers by:
The quantity of ideas
The average quality of ideas
The number of truly exceptional ideas
Here’s what they found:
The quantity of ideas: Unsurprisingly, ChatGPT produced ideas at a considerably faster rate than humans.
The average quality of ideas: The average purchase probability of a human-generated idea was 40%, while ChatGPT-generated ideas scored 47%.
The number of truly exceptional ideas: Of the top 10% of ideas, 88% were generated by ChatGPT, while only 12% were generated by the students.
The study adds one more brick to what is now a growing wall of evidence of generative AI’s remarkable performance on tasks that were previously considered exclusively the domain of humans.

INSIGHT
Salesforce research shows there’s a big generational gap in adoption of AI tools
70% of Gen Z uses AI, out of which 52% use it to make informed decisions. But older generations are much slower to catch up: 88% of Gen X and Baby Boomers are unsure how AI will affect their life.
These numbers are from a new piece of research from Salesforce, which showcases the glaring generational divide between the users and non-users of generative AI.
Key insights from the research:
65% of generative AI users are Millennials or Gen Z.
68% of non-users are Gen X or Baby Boomers.
Almost 60% of younger users believe they are on their way to mastering the technology.
88% of older generations are unclear how generative AI will impact their life and 40% say they aren’t familiar enough with the technology.
Of those who use AI, 75% say they are looking to automate tasks at work and use generative AI for work communications.
