ChatGPT goes down after alleged DDoS attack

Many of ChatGPT’s 100 million active users are probably experiencing an emotional rollercoaster this week. After the much-hyped OpenAI event that delivered a spectacular set of new features and upgrades earlier this week, users are reporting major service outages since yesterday.

OpenAI initially claimed that the outage was due to increased demand for its new features but later claimed that a DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack is behind “periodic outages” that are affecting both ChatGPT and its developer tools.

A DDoS attack is designed to overwhelm an online app or website by sending it more requests than it can handle. Hacktivist group Anonymous Sudan took credit for the alleged attack and blamed it on OpenAI’s “general biasness towards Israel and against Palestine”.

We’ve logged into ChatGPT several times today and found it to be functioning normally, so the issue may have been fixed. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
