OpenAI’s Sam Altman isn’t buying the hype about his company hitting an AGI wall. “There is no wall,” he recently quipped on X. Still, the speculation has sent researchers scrambling to find new training methods — and MIT might have stumbled on a solution just in time.

TODAY IN AI

1. MIT breakthrough could help us reach AGI faster: If AI progress is really starting to level off, what will it take to jumpstart innovation again? A new MIT study could hold the key. Researchers boosted an LLM’s performance by fine-tuning their questions beforehand — sort of like letting the model check its notes before answering. OpenAI’s Noam Brown is just one of the experts who say they’re intrigued by the approach.

2. ChatGPT can now interact with coding apps: A new desktop update gives ChatGPT the ability to work alongside developer platforms like VS Code, Xcode, and Terminal — so you no longer have to copy and paste each time you want coding help. It’s our first taste of the platform’s agentic qualities, with a more powerful version called Operator expected in January. Plus, the ChatGPT desktop app just landed on Windows for all users.

3. AI coding startup Tessl enters crowded field with $125M: Most AI-powered software engineering assistants require at least a bit of coding knowledge. But with a Series A valuation of $750M, Tessl wants to let even non-developers design apps with text prompts alone. The London-based startup is up against rivals like Codeium, Cognition, and Magic AI, who each reached unicorn status this year.

FROM THE FRONTIER

OpenAI’s pitch to the US government: Let’s work together

Source: BBC

OpenAI thinks the US won’t be able to keep up with the likes of China unless it starts investing big-time in things like data centers, energy, and advanced chips. In a new proposal, the startup asked the government to work with its allies to shore up resources, foster top talent, and find new power sources. It argues the plan could even help “revitalize the American Dream,” sending a jolt through the economy.

Its boldest idea: A data center five times bigger than anything currently in development, which could cost as much as $100B to build. That concept sounds an awful lot like “Stargate,” a rumored plan between Microsoft and OpenAI to create a massive, 5-gigawatt supercluster powerful enough to reach AGI. Reports earlier this year suggest that project could go online as soon as 2028.
