Psychologists are looking into the effects of AI on our minds.

And some of them believe that AI takes away a lot of the creativity and cognition associated with human work.

Just as we’ve started following Google Maps blindly in recent years, we might also start trusting AI with some of our most critical tasks, instead of learning these skills ourselves.

“I get concerned about the fact that we just blindly believe the GPS. We don’t question it. Are we just going to blindly believe the AI?” says Larry Rosen, a professor emeritus of psychology at California State University.

At the heart of the debate is the central question that plays out over and over again in these conversations: Will AI make us more skilled and productive, in the same way that the internet did? Or will it instead make us redundant?

China and US battle for AI dominance

If AI is the new gold, then Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are the new shovels that companies need to dig up that gold.

Problem is, there’s only a very limited supply of GPUs, and every country wants them.

In a move designed to secure supply for US companies (and keep it out of Chinese hands), the US government banned major GPU manufacturers from exporting to China.

But China wasn’t gonna sit around and wait for the restrictions to come into place. They’re buying up as many of these sweet, sweet GPUs before the bans hit.

ByteDance alone has bought $1 billion worth of GPUs, totalling 100,000 units. For comparison, ChatGPT was trained using only 10,000 GPUs.

OpenAI is working on an App Store for AI

OpenAI plans to reportedly launch a marketplace for web developers, allowing them to sell their AI models which have been built on top of the company’s technology. This marketplace will expand the company’s current customer base and it will enable them to compete with other tech app stores such as Microsoft.
