AI-generated deepfake video calls from your friends and colleagues

Researchers fear we are on the cusp of AI-generated deepfakes designed to steal our sensitive information

If you get a lot of emails at work, you’ve probably experienced the occasional phishing scam that pretends to be your boss or colleague and tries to steal you credentials. Now imagine a zoom call with a scammer who looks and sounds exactly like your boss.

According to a new article published in Bloomberg, cybersecurity professionals are afraid that hackers are looking to do exactly that.

Earlier this month, researchers at Mandiant - a Google-owned cybersecurity firm - uncovered the first known case of AI-powered deepfake video tech designed and sold for phishing scams.

Ads for the software reportedly talked about its ability to replicate human likeness and “seem more personal in nature” while attempting to steal details.

However, researchers were unable to verify if the software was legit or if it had been used in any attack yet, so it might be prudent not to sound an alarm until they do. After all, criminals aren’t known for telling the truth, and the claims of this deepfake video may not be entirely accurate.

And that’s not the only reason to stay calm for now. While AI video generation tech is getting better by the day, so are AI video detection tools. Remember all the kids who thought they could get away with ChatGPT generated essays, only to get caught by AI detection tools? There’s every chance that similar tools could emerge for AI-generated video to help us identify what’s real and what’s not.

While it showed exceptional results in final diagnoses (77% accuracy), it struggled with differential diagnosis and was less effective in medication assignment.
