Cursor is fast becoming the ChatGPT of coding

What’s all the fuss about? Well, there’s a new AI tool in town and this time it looks like the real deal. A new AI-assisted coding tool called Cursor lets technical and non-technical users alike write code without actually writing code.

How do you write code without writing code? Similar to ChatGPT, you give Cursor a prompt and it generates the code for you. In our experiments, the code doesn’t always work but you can tell Cursor which part of the code doesn’t work and it fixes that for you.

So you just give it a prompt and it pops out an app? Well, sort of. With some practice you can start building basic apps in hours. Here are a few impressive things users have built with Cursor:

  • One user with no coding experience built a working browser extension.

  • Another user built a portfolio website using their resume.

  • A more experienced user with coding experience built a basic Airbnb clone in just a few minutes.

RIP Software Developers? Not really to be honest. There’s a lot more that goes into building apps than just writing code. You also need to know how to build the backend, design the architecture, deploy to production, and so on. At this point, tools like Cursor will likely make developers more productive than replace them, while also lowering the barrier for newcomers who don’t know how to code.
