Why Meta is releasing a Twitter rival
While Elon Musk has been training for his alleged cage fight with Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO sucker punched his rival this week with the company announcing that it is releasing its competitor to Twitter.
Twitter, under Musk's rule, has hit some bumps, including big layoffs, declining ad revenue, and a major drop in value. Amidst this turmoil, Meta's new app, Threads, hopes to capitalize on Twitter’s woes and seize the initiative.
While there are many reasons for launching a Twitter competitor now, one of the biggest reasons is that text platforms like Twitter and Reddit hold vast amounts of text data that can be used to train AI models. And Meta presumably wants to build up its own vault of text-based data to train its models with this new app.
Despite many startups trying and failing to fill the void created by Twitter's problems, Meta hopes to succeed with Threads. But the question lingers — will Threads follow in the footsteps of previous Meta missteps like Facebook Dating and various gaming initiatives, or will it reach the heights of Instagram Stories and Reels?
