Veo 2 is now publicly available via Freepik. Source: Freepik

1. Google’s Veo 2 gets public release: First announced in December, Google’s Veo 2 has finally made its public debut on AI image and video platforms Freepik and Fal. Google says it beats out rivals like Meta’s Movie Gen and OpenAI’s Sora Turbo across both prompt adherence and overall performance. Freepik shared some examples of what you can create along with the prompts used to generate them. Early users can get a few generations at no cost, but the official Veo 2 pricing page says using the model will cost 50 cents per second of video.

2. Microsoft may be getting cold feet about aggressive AI spend: Microsoft has begun canceling lease agreements for significant data center capacity across the US, according to a new analyst report. If true, the move raises questions about long-term AI computing demand, and could impact OpenAI, which relies on Microsoft's infrastructure to power its AI models. The apparent pullback comes as investors increasingly scrutinize the massive capital expenditures flowing into AI infrastructure.

3. New AI tool can detect whether you have Covid, diabetes, or HIV: Researchers have developed a new method of diagnosing multiple diseases with a single blood test. Using a special machine learning technique, the scientists were able to determine whether a patient had Covid, HIV, lupus, and type-1 diabetes. It could even tell if they’d recently gotten a flu shot. The real game-changer: The technique could one day be used to diagnose more obscure conditions that are currently undetectable.

FROM THE FRONTIER

DeepSeek reveals more details about how it built R1

DeepSeek will reveal more details about its latest models this week. Source: Getty Images

AI spending has mostly recovered from DeepSeek’s market shakeup. But there’s still plenty left to learn from the startup’s state-of-the-art model, R1. The Chinese company revealed it’ll publish five code repositories filled with data and materials related to its reasoning-focused LLM this week, giving developers a rare glimpse into how it was built.

What’s behind the decision? It says it’s making the bold move because “every line shared becomes collective momentum that accelerates the journey” toward AGI. In other words, it wants to let smaller developers check its notes so that they can build their own state-of-the-art models using similar techniques. Universities in China are even launching their own courses just to study the breakthrough.

Why it matters: There’s a lot of debate about what truly counts as “open-source.” Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have opted to completely hide their model training data and methods. But even open-source proponents like Meta and xAI keep some proprietary information to themselves. DeepSeek’s move could pressure them to share more details about their models next time around.
