1. In a major industry shakeup, Arm will start making its own chips: The UK-based company typically creates blueprints for semiconductors, then licenses them to partners like Apple. But for the first time, it’s going to make its own, potentially cutting into Nvidia’s lead. It’s even resorted to hiring executives from its own customers to speed up the transition.

• Meta has already signed on to use the company’s first in-house CPU in its data centers.

• SoftBank, which owns about 90% of Arm, may also tap the chips for Stargate, its $500B AI infrastructure project with OpenAI.

• Finally, there are rumors that the Arm-made CPU could even be used inside OpenAI’s upcoming AI gadget, which it’s building with legendary former Apple designer Jony Ive.

2. Gemini opens up access document upload feature: Open-source competitors are forcing big tech companies to rethink which features they hide behind paywalls. The latest example: You can now analyze documents, spreadsheets, and code files by uploading them to Gemini, something that was only available to Advanced subscribers before. As we mentioned on Friday, Advanced users do still get some special perks, like a new feature that helps Gemini remember your previous conversations.

3. xAI’s Grok 3 is launching tonight: According to a post by CEO Elon Musk, who touted it as the “Smartest AI on Earth.” Trained using synthetic data, the model can reportedly analyze and correct its own errors through data review, launching at a time when competition in AI development is heating up. There’ll be a live demo at 8pm PT.

Perplexity gets ‘deep’ with new research feature

Perplexity is giving OpenAI a run for its money. The search giant’s new Deep Research tool can conduct “expert-level analysis” across topics like finance, product research, and marketing — but it’s totally free, compared to OpenAI’s $200/month offering.

Here’s how it works: If you select “Deep Research” in the drop-down menu, Perplexity will conduct dozens of web searches and analyze hundreds of sources to compile a comprehensive report based on your prompt. Free users get up to five questions per day, while Pro subscribers ($20/month) have unlimited access.

How does it compare to rivals? OpenAI’s version still takes the cake on Humanity’s Last Exam, but not by much. Perplexity scored a 21.1%, beating out Google’s Gemini Thinking, DeepSeek’s R1, and even OpenAI’s o3-mini high. And when it comes to performance, Perplexity blows the competition out of the water, taking just a minute or two to generate a detailed report.

When can we try it? It’s already available on the web, while iOS, Android, and Mac versions are rolling out soon.
