1. OpenAI unveils GPT-4.5, its largest and most user-friendly model yet: First rumored way back in October, GPT-4.5 — code-named Orion — is rolling out today for ChatGPT Pro users, while Plus subscribers can expect to try it out sometime next week. More details in the next section.

2. Amazon’s new chip could make quantum computing a reality: After the AI-powered Alexa revamp, Amazon is back with a new quantum chip called Ocelot. Quantum computers could one day make AI exponentially more efficient. Ocelot cuts down on errors by up to 90%, addressing the key challenge that’s held quantum computing back for decades. Amazon isn’t alone: Microsoft synthesized a new form of matter in the pursuit of its own quantum chip just last week.

3. There’s a new player in China’s AGI race: Chinese tech giant Tencent released Hunyuan Turbo S, which it claims combines the power of a reasoning model with the speed of an efficiency-focused one. It can respond to prompts in a matter of seconds while outperforming rivals like DeepSeek’s V3 (R1’s predecessor), GPT-4o, and Claude 3.5.

4. Meta’s branching out on the App store: Meta is reportedly set to launch an independent app for its AI assistant in mid-2025 and explore premium subscription options, advancing Zuckerberg's ambition to surpass rivals OpenAI and Google in the AI sector. With 700+ million users already accessing the assistant through Meta's platforms, the move would fit right in to the company's broader AI strategy – and it’s got Sam Altman thinking of pulling the “uno reverse” card.

OpenAI shows off its next base model, GPT-4.5

OpenAI’s long-rumored “Orion” has taken on a legendary status ever since we started hearing whispers about it last October. Well, GPT-4.5 is finally here: It’s big, it’s powerful, and it marks the end of an era as OpenAI’s last non-reasoning model.

Some context: You might recall that OpenAI was reportedly in panic mode last year because Orion wasn’t showing the same major gains as its predecessors. (That’s when the startup decided to start focusing on reasoning models instead.) Now that we have some early impressions to go by, it looks like there’s a lot more to the story.

How so?

• CEO Sam Altman’s pitch is that while GPT-4.5 might not sweep all the benchmarks, it feels much better to use. “It’s a different kind of intelligence and there’s a magic to it I haven’t felt before,” he wrote on X.

• It can pick up on the nuances of your prompts, it’s more well-read, and it knows how to format its answers in a way that’s easier to digest. In short, it’s much better at acting like a very smart, empathetic human.

How was it made? To boost GPT-4.5’s performance, OpenAI experimented with new training techniques, like running multiple data centers simultaneously and feeding the model synthetic data generated by its reasoning-focused siblings. That approach makes it much less likely to hallucinate.

What should I use it for? If you’re doing intense math and science, you’ll probably want to stick to o3-mini. But for creative ideas, writing, and practical advice, GPT-4.5 is the way to go.

How to create videos with Adobe Firefly AI

• Go to the Adobe Firefly website and sign up.

• Choose the ‘Text to Video’ or ‘Image to Video’ option on the homepage to open the workspace.

• Write a text prompt or upload an image. Make sure to add the shot type, character, action, location, and aesthetic to your prompt.

Sample Prompt: “a [shot type] of a [enter character] in a [location], [add aesthetics], snowflakes falling softly in the background, highly detailed.”

• You can also upload an image to convert into a video.

• When you’re satisfied with your prompt, click ‘Generate’.

• Use the download button in the top right to download as an mp4 file.

• You can adjust the aspect ratio, camera angle, and motion. And if you’d like, add more detail to your text prompt to generate completely new videos.
