Welcome back, Superhuman. If you thought DeepSeek’s industry-rattling R1 was efficient, wait ‘til you hear this one: Alphabet just unveiled a new model called Gemma 3 that’s 98% as accurate as its Chinese counterpart — except it can run on a single GPU, instead of the 32 needed for R1.

1. Alibaba’s new model knows what you’re feeling: Besides noticing details like what kind of clothing you’re wearing, the Chinese e-commerce giant’s new R1-Omni can pick up on emotional cues, too. By analyzing both visual and audio data, it can even figure out whether someone is crying out of joy or sadness. The open-source model could make AI-powered therapy apps more effective. Plus, it’s likely the biggest threat yet to OpenAI’s emotionally-savvy GPT-4.5.
2. Docs reveal Anthropic and Alphabet have deeper ties than we thought: Google is literally betting on Anthropic’s success. Newly uncovered court filings show it’s funneled more than $3B into the startup, with another $750M injection planned in September. All told, Alphabet owns nearly 15% of the Claude-maker — although it stays out of voting and board meetings so both companies can keep their independence.
3. Sakana unveils ‘first-ever’ peer-reviewed paper generated by AI: Japan’s largest AI startup announced that its AI Scientist just generated a research paper, complete with hypotheses, experiments, and visuals, then got it approved by a prestigious LLM-focused conference in what might be a world-first. It faced the same level of scrutiny as a human researcher, but there are some big caveats, like the fact that Sakana had to fix a few “embarrassing citation errors” before submitting the final draft.

FROM THE FRONTIER
Alphabet unveils model that can fit on a single AI chip

Gemma 3 strikes a balance between performance and efficiency. Source: Alphabet
AI companies are constantly trying to find the perfect balance between power and efficiency. But what if you could have both? Alphabet might have just defied the odds with a new model family called Gemma 3. It’s so efficient that developers can use it to build apps small enough to “fit on a single GPU or TPU.” At the same time, it’s powerful enough to keep up with the likes of OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSeek’s R1.
What are some of its specs?
As a multimodal model, it can seamlessly work across different mediums and even perform some agentic tasks. It’s built on the foundation of Gemini 2.0, but it’s open-source, so developers have free rein to tweak it as they wish.
While Gemma 2 could only be used in English, its successor supports over 140 languages.
It comes in four sizes — 1B, 4B, 12B, and 27B parameters — but has a context window of 128,000 tokens, meaning it can still handle longer text and remember previous conversations.
Here’s a video with more details.
Why it’s a big deal: Most AI-powered products have to tap into massive data centers via the cloud — otherwise, they’d bring a consumer-grade laptop or phone to its knees. But Gemma 3 is small enough that a newer computer would be able to run it locally without a problem, making it far more accessible to coders with smaller builds.
