GitHub's coding future

ALSO: How to bring characters to life with AI

Read time: under 4 minutes

The age-old question "which AI writes the best code?" could soon be replaced by "which is best for this specific task?" Rather than crowning a single winner, GitHub is letting developers tap into multiple models from one centralized location.

TODAY IN AI

The new Mac Mini is both smaller and more powerful. Source: Apple

1. New Mac Mini fits in the palm of your hand: In its first major update in a decade, Apple’s latest Mac Mini is “more mighty, more mini, and built for Apple Intelligence.” Coming in at 5×5 inches, the base version features the M4 chip — or you can upgrade to the newly-announced M4 Pro, which can tackle even more complex AI tasks. The company also confirmed that Apple Intelligence is finally headed to EU iPhones in April.

2. OpenAI chairman’s AI startup is now worth $4.5B: Bret Taylor’s customer service-focused AI startup just raised $175M in a new funding round. The former Salesforce co-CEO says Sierra’s AI agents will be able to autonomously answer customers’ questions and even help them place orders or update their subscriptions. It’s a sign that the AI sector is still growing, representing a third of all VC investments so far this year.

3. That’s not the only AI agent rolling into town: Taylor’s former company, Salesforce, just publicly launched Agentforce, which lets clients build their own AI agents without coding. They can be programmed to perform complex tasks entirely on their own across marketing, e-commerce, sales, and more. Founder Marc Benioff thinks the new tool could be just as transformative as the “cloud revolution was, the social revolution, the mobile revolution.”

PRESENTED BY SANA AI

Still not using an AI assistant? You’re wasting hours

Hot off the press: Sana has closed a $55m round led by NEA, bringing its total funding to $130m. With this latest raise, Sana is now one of the world’s most well-funded AI companies.

Alongside the round, Sana has announced that agentic features are coming to its AI assistant platform. Powered by Sana’s state-of-the-art RAG and its agent solution A-4, these agents will collaborate to solve complex multi-step problems, complete tasks in other apps, and self-critique their output until they’ve resolved the task at hand.

How to bring any character image to life using RunwayML's Act-One

RunwayML released Act-One, which can animate any image character in real time with a real actor's performance. Here's how to use it:

  • Go to the RunwayML website and log in.

  • Select Try Act One and make sure you choose Gen-3 Alpha as the model. Now select Act-One in the left-hand toolbar.

  • Upload your video or select from existing videos to add your driving performance in the top half of the Act-One window.

  • Make sure it is forward-facing, even if the character image you plan to upload is at a different angle.

  • Now, select the character reference image in the bottom half of the Act-One window.

  • Choose from an existing preset image, or switch to the Custom tab to upload your own.

  • Click on Generate and wait for a few seconds to get your video. (Subscription required)

  • You can download the video and share it once it's generated.

FROM THE FRONTIER

GitHub will let you switch between models to tackle coding challenges

Source: GitHub

The days of pledging allegiance to a single AI coding assist could be over. GitHub just announced its Copilot coding tool will now let developers hop between top AI models whenever they want — no need to pick just one favorite. Think of it like having different expert programmers at your disposal, each with their own unique strengths.

To start, engineers will have access to Claude 3.5, with Gemini 1.5 Pro, GPT-4o, and o1-preview coming soon. Meanwhile, a new tool called Spark lets developers build apps with simple prompts. It’ll make coding more accessible for newcomers while giving seasoned pros more flexibility.

Why it matters: Coding requires a lot of logic and problem-solving. As AI gets better at software engineering, we’ll see improvements in how models think through problems across other disciplines, too. Some experts even think coding mastery is a prerequisite for achieving AGI.
