Welcome back, Superhuman. Five percent of the world’s population now uses ChatGPT each week, but OpenAI isn’t stopping there. All signs point to the startup releasing GPT-4.5 in a matter of days — with GPT-5 not far behind.

1. Microsoft’s new model accelerates protein research: The new open-source deep learning model is called BioEmu-1 and Microsoft claims it can match the accuracy of supercomputer simulations by generating thousands of protein structures per hour on a single chip. By providing researches faster and more accurate predictions into how proteins function, the model paves the way for further advancements in areas like drug development.
2. Crunchbase’s new AI tool predicts which startups will succeed: At least 75% of VC-backed startups fail. But Crunchbase, a go-to source for financial information, says it’s using AI to make investing in them a little less perilous. Its new model, trained on 17 years of data, can forecast which startups are likely to get funding with up to 95% accuracy. Last year, it predicted that productivity startup Coda was bound to be acquired — and sure enough, it was purchased by Grammarly just two months later.
3. Hugging Face unveils model small enough to ‘run on your toaster’: The AI platform just dropped a family of open-source VLMs called SmolVLM2 that it claims are the “smallest ever released.” One 500M-parameter version is so tiny it can run locally on your phone. It can analyze all kinds of visual information — from complex diagrams to text in photos — with comparable performance to its rivals, while coming in a much smaller package.

OpenAI isn’t going to let Elon Musk have the final word: xAI made the daring move earlier this week to temporarily hand out Grok 3 — allegedly the “smartest AI on earth” — to everyone at no cost, sending Grok straight to the App Store’s #1 slot. But Microsoft, OpenAI’s main server provider, is already battening down the hatches for GPT 4.5, which could release as soon as next week.
What to expect: The new model is likely to sweep the charts across coding, math, and reasoning. But as the startup’s final non-chain-of-thought release, it also represents an end of an era. GPT-5, reportedly set to come out in late May, will bring all of ChatGPT’s features — from deep search to web browsing to the agentic Operator tool — under one roof.
It’s been an uphill battle: Ex-CTO Mira Murati recently scooped up 20 OpenAI engineers for her new startup. CEO Sam Altman fended off a $97B bid from Musk last week. And DeepSeek gave the startup a run for its money with R1. Despite all of that, COO Brad Lightcap says OpenAI just reached a new milestone: It now has 400M weekly active users — more than the entire US population. Can it keep up the momentum? The next couple weeks could be its sink or swim moment.
