A mysterious chatbot creates excitement among the AI community

Social media platforms and online forums were brimming with excitement yesterday at the discovery of a new AI model in the wild that seems on par with — or even better than — OpenAI’s leading GPT-4 model which powers ChatGPT.

Here’s what happened:

• A new AI model called “gpt2-chatbot” surfaced on the LMSYS Chatbot Arena, a popular website for comparing AI models.

• Several accounts on social media platforms reported unexpectedly superior performance from the model.

• Stanford Univeristy student and AI researcher Andrew Gao claimed that gpt-2 solved an International Math Olympiad problem.

• Wharton professor Ethan Mollick echoed similar sentiments about gpt-2’s performance compared to GPT-4.

The source of the model is unknown but many are pointing out similarities between responses from gpt-2 and OpenAI’s GPT-4, potentially indicating that OpenAI is testing a new AI model before releasing it officially.

In a bit of apparent mischief, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman added to the excitement by neither confirming or denying the claims, posting “i do have a soft spot for gpt2.“

How to use the gpt-2 chatbot

• Go to the LMSYS chatbot website

• At the top of the website, click on Direct Chat

• Navigate to the drop down menu under Choose any model to chat and pick gpt-2 chabot from the options

• Scroll down to enter your prompt and press enter

Note: The chatbot is rate limited, which means that you can only try a few prompts at a time. We found that the chatbot would stop working at various points during the day in our tests. If you are unable to access the chatbot, we recommend trying later.
