Not every AI startup wants to change the world — some just want to make it work better. Cohere's new North platform shows how staying focused on practical fixes can be more valuable than chasing moonshots like AGI.

TODAY IN AI

1. Cohere’s bold bet on enterprise: Copilot and Vertex AI might have the name recognition, but Canadian startup Cohere says its new AI workspace, North, punches well above its weight. With a $5.5B valuation, Cohere decided early on to stay out of the AGI race, focusing instead on practical AI tools. Co-founder Nick Frosst, an Alphabet alum, told CNBC that was the right call: While his clients constantly request better HR, payroll, and fraud detection tools, “no one has ever asked me about achieving AGI.”

2. Grok on the go: xAI’s Grok just got an iOS app, letting you use the chatbot without an X account. A standalone site is coming soon, too. Not to mention, a new “unhinged mode” will spew “objectionable, inappropriate, and offensive content, much like an amateur stand-up comic,” according to a recently updated FAQ page. Elon Musk has pitched Grok as a bad boy willing to chat about subjects other chatbots won’t touch.

3. Adobe’s new special effects tool cuts through the haze: Video models like Gen-3 and Sora are good at rendering solid objects but still can’t grasp transparent elements like smoke and mist. So Adobe researchers built TransPixar, a model that can generate things like wispy clouds, fantastical portals, and shattered glass. Only available as a demo for now, it could one day make SFX accessible to a larger share of creators.

How Zain uses 20+ AI models in one platform

I routinely have ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini open side-by-side because each model excels at tasks that the others don't.

  • Toggle 20+ AI models in the same chat thread

  • Compare answers to find the best one

  • Eliminates tab switching/prompt pasting

In a recent LinkedIn post, I explained why I like using You.com. Instead of switching tabs and pasting prompts, it allows me to use different models in the same thread to find the best solution.

FROM THE FRONTIER

New model draws from a trillion facts to boost accuracy

Good thing they don’t let AI compete on Jeopardy. Despite having only a few dozen employees, Silicon Valley startup Diffbot quietly built one of the web’s largest knowledge indexes by autonomously scraping websites and organizing their contents. Its database of over a trillion factoids gives it a unique edge in AI development.

The details:

  • The startup just revealed a new model built off of Meta’s open-source Llama 3.3, but with a key difference: It has encyclopedic memory

  • While most models predict the next line in a string of text, Diffbot’s LLM can seek out specific facts from its vast dataset in real time

  • This method leads to far fewer hallucinations — it’s like recalling past experiences instead of generating something entirely new — making it the “world’s most factually grounded” model to date

What it means: Using as few as 1B parameters, the approach could prove more accurate and efficient compared to traditional methods, offering a worthy alternative as the industry runs up against energy and data restraints.
