1.4 billion workers will have to reskill for AI in the next 3 years — IBM

We’ve all heard it a thousand times: AI won’t replace you, a person using AI will (yawn). But is it actually true? Executives around the world apparently seem to think so.

According to a new IBM survey of 3,000 executives, 87% of executives expect generative AI to augment roles rather than replace them.

However, executives surveyed estimated that 40% of their workforces will have to reskill in the next 3 years to adapt to the changes that AI will bring to their businesses — that’s about 1.4 billion workers out of the 3.4 billion global workforce.

According to the report, companies that reskill their workers successfully see a revenue growth rate premium of 15% compared to non-adopters. And those who emphasize AI see a 36% higher rate of revenue growth compared to their peers.

Another significant finding was that employers are placing a lower premium on technical skills like STEM proficiency, and an increased emphasis on skills like time management and communication skills. The report attributes this change in hiring preferences to AI tools like ChatGPT lowering the necessity for technical skills.

A Pink Floyd song made with AI and brain scans sounds a lot like the band

The study used regression-based models to reconstruct a classic rock song from neural activity recorded from electrodes implanted in neurosurgical patients.

The study found a right-hemisphere preference and a primary role of the Superior temporal gyrus in music perception. The 15-second audio clip produced in the study sounds like a muddy version of a Pink Floyd song. Read more
