Welcome back, superhuman

It’s the machines vs the machines today as computer scientists at the University of Chicago build an app to help people protect their images from being used by AI models.

And if luck is being at the right place at the right time, there’s a tiny island nation that could make up to 10% of their GDP from a crazy AI coincidence.

THE BIG INSIGHT

UChicago scientists: This AI tool protects your images from being used by AI models

We’ve witnessed an absolute explosion of AI image generation tools over the last year. And some of these tools produce images so realistic that people have a hard time telling AI-generated images apart from real ones.

And this means there are some very real dangers. Bad actors can use AI to do things like:

  • Generate deepfakes

  • Create images with our likeness without our consent

  • Use images and photos from artists to train AI models

But scientists at the University of Chicago may have a solution. If AI can be used to create images, it can also be reverse engineered to do the opposite. The scientists at UChicago have created an AI tool called Glaze that cloaks your images in a way that makes it confusing for AI models to understand.

According to the official website, Glaze uses AI to create "a set of minimal changes to artworks, such that it appears unchanged to human eyes, but appears to AI models like a dramatically different art style."

The tool has been downloaded over 890,000 times and is reportedly being used by a growing number of artists to protect their art.

Note: The Glaze website was down at the time of writing, potentially for maintenance and upgrades. Please check back after a few hours if the website is still down. You can view the original research paper here.

A tiny Caribbean island finds itself sitting on a valuable AI treasure

Bloomberg

In what is surely one of the craziest stories to emerge from the AI hype cycle, the tiny island nation of Anguilla could reportedly make up to 10% of its GDP — or $30 million — from selling “.ai“ domains.

While $30 million doesn’t sound like a lot compared to the billions we see in the headlines every day, that’s a good chunk of change for a country with less than 20,00 residents and a reported $300 million GDP in 2021.

Just like the US owns .us domains and the UK owns .uk domains, Anguilla was assigned the .ai domains to establish their country’s presence back in 1995. And thanks to the surging demand for .ai domains, Anguilla finds itself at the right place at the right time to benefit from the AI boom.

Parkinson's disease could be detected early with AI scans

A study from Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute found that eye scans powered by AI could identify Parkinson's disease even before symptoms show up. Within a sample of more than 154k patients, the study applied AI to assess retinal indicators. The technique detected physical changes in Parkinson's patients' eyes, on average, 7 years before a clinical diagnosis. The scans are thought to be more accurate and economical than standard brain scans, and they might be used as a pre-screening tool. Read more
