Meta’s Llama 3 is taking the AI world by storm

“There really is no reason anyone should be using free ChatGPT-3.5 anymore” claims Wharton professor Ethan Mollick, “Llama 3 is much better & free.” The statement echoes the general sentiment across social platforms these past days since Llama 3 was released publicly.

Here’s what you need to know:

• The larger 70B version of Llama 3 is now only second to OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo on the LMSYS leaderboard for English prompts.

• The smaller 8b model handily outperforms GPT-3.5, which powers the free version of ChatGPT.

• The Llama 3 models are open-source and considerably less expensive to run that closed alternatives like GPT-4.

Llama 3 also appears to run noticeably faster compared to ChatGPT according to several videos shared on social platforms. Others are claiming that they are able to run the model locally on their laptops and other devices, instead of the cloud.

Llama 3 is available to test on meta.ai and is also powering the company’s chatbots across its social apps like Instagram.
