TODAY IN AI

Users can try out MiniMax’s new model via its consumer-facing Hailuo AI platform. Source: MiniMax

1. MiniMax shakes up open source arena with new model: The Singapore-based company just dropped MiniMax-01, a long-context, open-source language model that can process nearly 4M tokens — the equivalent of a small library — all at once. The model uses a “Lightning Attention” mechanism, which helps it process data at “20x to 32x the capacity of other leading models” and at a fraction of the price.

2. AI-powered workspaces just got a lot lighter on the wallet: Alphabet announced it’s bringing its entire stack of AI tools — including Gmail summaries, a NotebookLM research assistant, and the Gemini chatbot — to its Workspace platform for free. But plans are still set to rise by $2 per user. Meanwhile, Microsoft relaunched Copilot Chat as part of Microsoft 365, offering users a free AI chat interface and access to Copilot AI agents on a pay-as-you-go basis.

3. Renowned AI researcher joins AGI race: Alphabet vet François Chollet might be best known for his work on the ARC-AGI benchmark, one of the trickiest AI evaluations around. Now, he’s trying to build a model savvy enough to ace his own test. Chollet’s new startup, Ndea, will use a novel technique called program synthesis to help LLMs pick up new skills from only a few examples, with the ultimate goal of achieving human-level intelligence.

FROM THE FRONTIER

A bold plan to bring woolly mammoths back with AI

Colossus Biosciences has ambitious plans to bring the woolly mammoth back from extinction. Source: Colossus Biosciences

Steven Spielberg’s ‘93 classic “Jurassic Park” is getting another remake — but not in the way you’d expect. Biotech startup Colossal Biosciences just raised $200M in new funding. Their pitch is enough to get any investor excited: the de-extinction of long-lost species like the woolly mammoth, the Tasmanian tiger, and even the iconic dodo bird.

Founded in 2021, Colossal blends AI with computational biology and genetic engineering to tackle one of biology’s biggest challenges: The path from ancient genomes to living species.

Here’s where things stand:

  • Woolly Mammoth: Colossal has already sequenced the woolly mammoth genome using advanced CRISPR tech. Next, it plans to engineer Asian elephants with mammoth genes, tweaking them so they’re adaptable to colder climates.

  • Thylacine: The team has successfully mapped the thylacine genome and even pulled viable DNA from preserved specimens. They're stepping up cloning efforts, but a viable Tasmanian tiger is still far off.

  • Dodo: The dodo’s genome is officially on file, and scientists have spotted key traits needed to bring the bird back to life. They’re now looking to modify pigeon DNA with dodo traits.

🤹‍♂️ Master Multi-Tasker: In an industry first, an experimental version of Alphabet’s Gemini model learned to analyze multiple video streams and static images at the same time.

💼 On the Hunt: LinkedIn is launching two new AI features: The “Jobs Match” tool, which guides users to roles worth applying for, and a new AI agent that helps businesses scan mountains of CVs to find the perfect fit.

🤝 Fair Trade: OpenAI will help Axios expand into four new cities in exchange for full access to the site’s articles. Meanwhile, Alphabet announced it’s working with the Associated Press to beef up Gemini’s real-time research skills.

👀 Instant Intel: Wyze security cameras can now use AI to summarize the footage they capture — for example, “a delivery driver wearing a blue hat leaves a package on the doorstep.”

🏎️ Full Throttle: Italian researchers let an experimental driving model take control of a convertible Maserati and accelerate to 177 mph down a runway. Next month, they’ll attempt to set a new record at Florida’s Cape Canaveral.

📈 Market: Tech and AI stocks got a big boost after a government report showed inflation cooling in December — a welcome sign for the overall economy. Shares for Quantum Computing Inc. alone shot up 55.45%.

💰 Funding: Nvidia-backed startup Synthesia, whose model transforms documents into realistic AI videos, raised $180M in a Series D funding round, with its valuation soaring to $2.1B. Nvidia is also throwing its weight behind Taiwan’s MetAI, which uses AI to build digital simulations of the real world. IBM’s open-source software subsidiary Red Hat has acquired Neural Magic as it looks to create products that make AI models more accessible and efficient. And Maki, whose AI tools can automate up to 80% of the hiring process, just raised nearly $29M.
