Welcome back, Superhuman

When it comes to AI, Meta has always been the odd llama out. While most startups keep their source code under lock and key, Meta has remained defiantly open-source. In just a few weeks, it’s expected to unveil its biggest model yet.

Meta appears set to release an even bigger Llama model

Source: Meta

Hot AI Summer has seemingly no end. The Information reported Friday that Meta will release a new version of its Llama 3 AI model on July 23. The reason it has us excited: While Llama currently comes in two sizes — 8B and 70B — the new version is purported to have 405 billion parameters. It’ll also be multimodal, meaning it can nimbly move between text and images.

Putting Llama’s size into perspective:

  • Parameters generally correspond to a model’s overall performance — the more parameters, the more an LLM can handle complicated tasks — but it’s not always so straightforward

  • For example, OpenAI’s GPT-4 is said to have 1.76 trillion parameters, combining eight models that are 220 billion parameters apiece

  • But early tests show that Meta’s new model performs about as well as OpenAI’s, suggesting that it packs a punch — getting more efficiency out of fewer parameters

Why it’s important: Meta’s models have so far remained open-source, which gives researchers and developers a chance to tweak and refine them to their own needs. The leading benchmarks usually rank OpenAI’s GPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and other closed-source models at the top of the pack, meaning that independent developers often have to rely on less powerful LLMs to conduct experiments. Meta’s new model could turn the tables, at least until something else comes along and inevitably surpasses it.

Besides, even if the new latest Llama 3 doesn’t immediately jump to the top of the charts, it may eventually end up there after some fine-tuning. Independent developers have previously created superpowered versions of older Llama models, adapting them to achieve even better results than their closed-source rivals. So if the trend holds, and Meta sticks to its open-source roots, developers might soon have a much bigger playground to work in.

  • Ctrl+Alt+Delete: The Rabbit R1 just got an update that lets users delete their device’s chat log. Previously, there was no way to permanently get rid of chats, raising security concerns.

  • Looking Ahead: In a bid to keep up with Meta, Alphabet is working on a pair of AR glasses that will feature AI capabilities.

  • Creative Control: In an effort to clamp down on AI companies’ training methods, a bipartisan group of senators has introduced new legislation that would make it illegal to remove watermarks from digital art.

  • Hidden Chips: An underground network of couriers is reportedly sneaking Nvidia’s AI chips into China in order to evade US sanctions.

😄 One Fun Thing: The AI-powered motion capture company Move AI showed off a series of tech demos of its new platform in action. Move Live lets studios create realistic motion capture animations without the need for restrictive mocap suits.

AI & UNIVERSITIES

It’s getting harder to train AI, and universities say they’re missing out

Source: Nvidia

Universities played a pivotal role in creating what we now call the internet: In fact, the first-ever web communication took place in 1969, when ARPANET sent the message “LOGIN” from a computer at UCLA to another in Stanford. At around the same time, colleges began working on early AI models, including ELIZA, a chatbot developed at MIT that helped inspire today’s more sophisticated LLMs.

Some computer science scholars argue those innovations were only possible because universities foster experimentation and creativity. Researchers in academia have the unique chance of investigating new technologies without any pressure to turn a profit. But the Wall Street Journal reports that recently, colleges have gotten fewer chances to contribute to the field of AI.

The reason: It now costs hundreds of millions to train state-of-the-art models, a sum that only large tech companies can swallow. Besides that, many researchers who might have traditionally spent their careers in academia are now joining AI startups, drawn by salaries that are too enticing to pass up.

What are colleges doing about it? Startups and universities have historically worked hand-in-hand — collaborating on projects and sharing expertise. Colleges are leaning into those partnerships even more these days. The University of Washington, for instance, offers a dual program where researchers can spend time at tech firms in order to borrow their resources. Other institutions, like the University at Buffalo, Columbia, and Cornell, are banding together to share computing power.

Others like MIT are shifting their perspective: Instead of trying to push the boundaries with larger and larger models, they’re focusing on how to use already-existing LLMs to help solve problems. That approach takes far less computing power  — and could ultimately have a bigger positive impact in the long-run.
