Meta’s new AI Studio lets you build chatbots without code

Source: Meta

In the early days of the internet, coding even the simplest website was a tricky undertaking. Now though, you don’t need any special expertise to build one from scratch. There are templates to get you started and platforms that automate most of the process for you.

Eventually, creating your own AI model might work similarly — and Meta is among the first companies already paving the way for that reality. It just launched its new AI Studio in the US, where users can customize their own chatbots to meet their needs.

How it works: First, you’ll adjust some parameters like your avatar’s tone, personality, and tagline. You can also specify what you want your character to specialize in — whether you’re looking for a co-writer for your sketch comedy series or a travel guru who can help you navigate a new city.

Meta shared some examples of what creators have already built with the platform:

Eat Like You Live There!: Created by chef Marc Murphy, this AI offers personalized tips for embracing local dining customs while you’re traveling

What Lens Bro: Photographer and videographer Angel Barclay created an AI that offers tips on finding the perfect lens for your shot

Flip Pawsitive Affirmation Dog: Actor and pet advocate Rocky Kanaka’s AI-powered dog gives you positive affirmations tailored to you

What next? You’ll be able to use your AI on apps like WhatsApp and Messenger or via an online portal. Instagram influencers, meanwhile, can create chatbots based on their own personalities, then use them to interact with fans (they’ll be marked with a special label so there’s no confusion).

A winning strategy? Meta is likely taking inspiration from Character AI — the first major startup to let users easily build their own custom AI models. That approach helped Character AI rocket to the top of engagement leaderboards — and Meta’s probably hoping to achieve something similar while staying true to its open source philosophy.

AI & PUBLISHERS

Perplexity will start paying publishers for their content

Source: Perplexity

News outlets can’t catch a break. First, the internet disrupted their print business. Then, changes to social media algorithms forced them to reshuffle all over again. Now, they face a brand-new shakeup: generative LLMs.

Some context: Most outlets rely on website visits to stay afloat — either through subscriptions or ads. The fear is that AI platforms could cut off that flow of traffic. As the theory goes: Why scour a news site if you can get the crucial information directly through AI searches?

For its part, Perplexity thinks the latest change isn’t such a bad thing:

  • In fact, it’s arguing that AI platforms could soon provide a new source of revenue for an otherwise struggling industry

  • On Tuesday, it put its money where its mouth is, unveiling a new “publishers’ program” that will see partners like Time, the Texas Tribune, and Fortune receiving a share of ad earnings when their content appears in Perplexity’s responses

  • Over the past several months, Forbes, Wired, and other sites had complained that Perplexity was lifting their content and republishing it without attribution

  • The new publishers’ scheme could be one way Perplexity is trying to make amends

Has the plan been well-received so far? It’s a mixed bag. Some media companies say it’s too little too late. Others point out that it’s much better than Google’s model, which offers publishers nothing for appearing in search results. For now, the “double-digit percentage” of ad revenue outlets are set to receive might not be enough to turn the industry around. But it has the potential to make a real difference down the line — especially if Perplexity continues to grow in popularity and engagement.

AI & TECH NEWS

Everything else you need to know today

Source: Alphabet

  •  Unexpected Allies: An Apple research paper revealed that the Tim Cook-led company used Alphabet’s TPUs — rather than Nvidia’s popular AI accelerators — to train its proprietary LLM.

  • Prolific Author: OpenAI has released an experimental, “long output” version of GPT-4o that features 64,000 output tokens — allegedly enough to write a 300-page book in a matter of minutes.

  • You Again: In other OpenAI news, the company gave some ChatGPT Plus users access to GPT-4o’s hyper-realistic voice.

  • Creative Renaissance: Canva plans to acquire Australian startup Leonardo AI in a bid to incorporate more generative tools into its design platform.

  • Government Green Light: In a new report, the US Commerce Department praised open source models like Llama 3.1 — arguing they’re easier for small businesses, researchers, and other groups to access.

😁 One Fun Thing: A photo this week of Olympic surfer Gabriel Medina posing mid-air was so stunning that some viewers assumed it was created with AI. But photographer Jérôme Brouillet confirmed that the gravity-defying image hadn’t been manipulated. Instead, he chalked it up to luck: “The conditions were perfect, the waves were taller than we expected.”

🧠 Brain Food: AI startups have been trying to get their AI models to forget information they no longer need, believing that might boost their overall performance. But a new study suggests “unlearning” shouldn’t be used in the real-world just yet, since it can degrade the quality of a model’s answers, eventually rendering them useless.
