Apple’s AI may not be good enough: Apple’s internal research shows that ChatGPT is more accurate and can answer more questions than Siri, according to a report from Bloomberg. The report also claims that Apple believes its generative AI tech is at least 2 years behind industry leaders.

Perplexity sets sights on new funding: Perplexity is reportedly looking to raise new funds, at more than twice its current valuation. The search startup has been one of the most successful companies to emerge from the current AI cycle, and counts Jeff Bezos among its backers.

False positives: A new report finds that AI detection services can sometimes flag human written essays as AI-generated, potentially landing students in undeserved trouble with their teachers. In some cases false positive rates were as high as 4%. Such findings may erode student and teacher trust in AI tools.

OpenAI and Microsoft: Close friends turned bitter rivals?

Microsoft and OpenAI are caught in a delicate dance: Sam Altman once described the duo’s partnership as the “best bromance in tech.” Back then, the terms were simple: Microsoft gave OpenAI money and computing power and got exclusive access to GPT in return. That all changed last month, when OpenAI announced its pivot to a for-profit model.

The problem: 

• Microsoft has backed OpenAI heavily and wants to make sure it gets a fair slice of the pie once the ChatGPT-maker makes the transition

• But reports suggest OpenAI is already trying to distance itself from Microsoft by finding new computing partners

• Microsoft, in turn, is putting more resources behind its own AI products — a move that could eventually put it in direct competition with its former ride or die
