If larger AI models like GPT-4 and LLama 3 are the big expensive monster trucks of AI, Microsoft’s new Phi-3 is models are more like the small and affordable daily drivers for users and companies that aren’t looking to drive a Hummer to work.

Here’s what you need to know about Phi-3:

• It comes in 3 sizes: Mini (3.8b), Small (7b), and Medium (14b).

• The mini 3.8b version appears to beat Meta’s larger 7b Llama 3 model on several key benchmarks — an impressive achievement.

• The model is so small that some early users were able to run it on their phones.

With AI models, smaller also usually means cheaper. And for companies and users on a budget who don’t need some of the frills that come packaged with larger models, Phi 3 may prove to be a tempting proposition.

AI IN BIOTECH

Biotech company succeeds in editing human genome with AI

While generative AI tools like ChatGPT are handy for everyday tasks like generating emails and images, the technology is also playing a major role in advancing deep scientific research.

Profluent, a biotech firm which describes itself as an AI-first protein design company, just debuted what it claims is the world’s first open-source, AI-generated gene editor. The company says that the technology enables precision editing of the human genome with customizable gene editors designed from scratch with AI.

The technology enables researchers to create new cures for genetic diseases that are currently untreatable. Profluent claim they intend to partner with researchers and drug development companies to do just that.

The company also said that the technology is open-source and freely available to license for ethical research and commercial uses.
