TODAY IN AI

1. What to expect from todayā€™s Nvidia keynote: CEO Jensen Huang has turned Nvidiaā€™s once-niche conference into the ā€œWoodstock for AI.ā€ This time, heā€™ll try to keep up the momentum by showing off Blackwell Ultra, an update to the companyā€™s already state-of-the-art Blackwell chip. Thereā€™s a lot on the line: The $2.95T company needs to explain why AI companies should keep spending on top-of-the-line chips, when Chinese rivals like DeepSeek and Baidu have seemingly built frontier models without these top-end chips.

2. ChatGPT could soon connect to third-party apps: OpenAI is reportedly beta testing a new feature called ChatGPT Connectors that lets you sync the chatbot with external platforms, like Google Drive and Slack. That would unlock all sorts of capabilities: For example, you could summarize meeting notes or find a statistic buried in a 100-page document without having to import your internal data each time.

3. A new LLM can keep other models in check: Patronus AI just unveiled what it says is the first-ever multimodal AI fact-checking tool. It can figure out whether another model is hallucinating across text, images, and soon, audio. Etsy has already started using it to make sure its photo captions are accurate. But itā€™s also useful for high-stakes industries like law and science, where even subtle mistakes can create big problems.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Mistral one-ups Alphabetā€™s Gemma-3

Alphabet stunned developers last week with Gemma-3, an open-source model so efficient it can run on a single GPU. But Mistral, one of the largest AI startups in Europe, just upped the ante.

It unveiled Mistral Small 3.1, which also can run on a single GPU, except itā€™s even more powerful than Gemma-3 and even GPT-4o Mini. In fact, Mistral claims itā€™s the first time a small open-source model has swept the board across text, languages, long contexts, and multimodal tasks.

What can it be used for? Its speed and efficiency make it especially good for things like function calling (retrieving information from different sources) and virtual assistants. Plus, itā€™s small enough that researchers and hobbyists can run it locally on a Mac with 32GB RAM.

What it means: While Mistral holds the small-model crown for now, itā€™s only a matter of time before another startup snatches it away. That competition is a win-win for developers and businesses though: It means cost is becoming less and less of a barrier for companies who want to start using AI.
