ALSO: How to turn videos into tutorials with AI

Read time: under 4 minutes

The debate around AI in education tends to get stuck on one point: Won’t students just use it as a shortcut, skipping all the hard parts of learning? But new research challenges that idea, suggesting we might be missing out on a huge opportunity by leaving LLMs on the table.

TODAY IN AI

1. Imagine Midjourney, but for real-world materials: That’s the idea behind Microsoft’s new MatterGen platform, which uses AI to create materials that have never existed before — including ones with mechanical, chemical, and magnetic properties that make them uniquely good at certain tasks, like absorbing CO2 or powering solar cells. These novel materials could reshape our world — after all, our smartphone batteries wouldn’t exist without the discovery of lithium cobalt oxide in the ‘80s.

2. Luma Labs one-ups itself with new frontier video model: The SF-based startup’s Dream Machine has quickly become many creators’ go-to platform for video generation. Now, it’s back with Ray2, a new model that promises “realistic videos with natural and coherent motion” as well as more accurate physics. It can generate both five and 10-second clips in a matter of seconds, although it’s only available to paid subscribers for now.

3. ‘Lost in translation’ no more: A sign that you’re becoming fluent in a second or third language: You’re able to think in that language, not just convert it into your native one. Meta’s new translation model, SeamlessM4T, works the same way — translating your voice across languages in real time without needing to turn it into text first. That breakthrough makes it about 23% more accurate than its rivals with support for up to 101 languages.

How AI Boosted Learning Outcomes in Nigeria

Students in Edo, Nigeria are using AI to boost their learning outcomes. Source: World Bank

A group of Nigerian students just learned two years worth of information in only six weeks. The game-changer that help them outperform their peers: GPT-4. The students were part of a World Bank pilot program that explores how AI might help boost learning outcomes in the developing world, where education resources can be limited.

So far, the results have been promising:

  • Using AI as a study buddy was more effective than 80% of commonly-used interventions

  • Even more noteworthy, participants scored better on their end-of-year tests, which took place after the pilot was already over

  • That suggests that by learning how to use AI in the first place, the students could keep turning to it for tutoring help months later

But the authors urged some caution: This study only looked at a narrow set of skills related to the English language, AI, and digital tools. It remains to be seen whether it works for other subjects, too, as well as whether the observed gains can last years down the line. The authors are also exploring whether the trial had any negative effects, like affecting students’ critical thinking skills.
