Google DeepMind cofounder says interactive AI is the next big wave, calls generative AI a passing phase

Google DeepMind cofounder Mustafa Suleyman thinks that generative is a passing phase, and that interactive AI is the next big thing in AI. Suleyman called the transformation “a profound moment” in the history of technology.

Suleyman divided AI’s evolution into 3 waves:

1. Classification: Training computers to classify various types of data like images and text.

2. Generative: The current wave, which takes input data to generate new data. ChatGPT is the best example of this.

3. Interactive: The next wave, where an AI will be capable of communicating and operating autonomously.

Interactive AI refers to bots that can carry out tasks set by you by interacting with other people and software to accomplish the task. Think of it as autonomous software that can talk to other apps to get things done.

One example is an AI app that could build a complex and fully functional app on your behalf. Another example is an AI that can attend a meeting on your behalf, generate action items from the meeting, accomplish the action items by itself, and then send you and the meeting attendees an update when it’s done.

We’ve covered attempts by researchers to create autonomous bots in previous issues, and some of the tests are pretty impressive. But we haven’t seen any autonomous AI applications that can produce real-world results on the scale and accuracy of generative AI apps like ChatGPT — yet.
